I am 3 days post op and haven't had a BM. I was on opti 3 weeks and I haven't had a BM for a good 5 days. When should I try some milk of magnesia? When did you have your first BM? My surgery was at TEGH with Dr Cyriac.
Thank,
Gina

If i read this right you have not had a BM for 8 days. i think now would be a good time for MOM

Thanks Pat! I meant 5 days in total not 8. Do you think its still ok to try a little MOM?

YES!!!!  The longer you wait - the worse it will be!  This is from personal (and horrible) experience post-op.  I am 3 months out, and I still HAVE to stay on top of this all the time or I`m in trouble.  You are risking impaction (not fun at all!).  Don`t be afraid to use MOM to get things outta there.  I am still not resolved completely after 3 months.... am currently using a `special` shake in the mornings combined with smoothe move tea every night - and trust me - if I miss either of these....there is a problem again.  BM`s will be different after surgery, but you have to do things to get things moving, at least for awhile, in my opinion.

Good luck!

I agree with Starry, go ahead and take the MOM.  I was 7 days post op and hadn't had a BM, could feel it, but it wouldn't move.  I ended up taking MOM and Ducocet (I know the name to see it, not sure if it's the right one or not) suppositories and it still wasn't pretty.  I took a half dose, but others take the full amount.  It works.

The nutritionist came to see me at the hospital before I left yesterday. She told me to start mom right away and also get and Inuil fibre as a back up, like benefibre. I haven't taken it yet but will try later today.

Surgery Monday 11 AM. BM 4 AM Friday and another 7 PM Friday. No meds needed. But I will keep an eye on it. I have Senokot-s but the Dietitian at my follow-up said it can give you cramps as it forces your bowels to contract. If your bowels are already moving it can be uncomfortable. So I won't take the Senokot until/if I really need it. Guess I am gonna invest in some MOM just in case.
