First night of CPAP

Picked up my cpap machine this afternoon... Here's hoping I learn to sleep with it on! I am trying the mask that comes with the unit first, which apparently is an old style but the only one the government covers, but it's a nose piece and I am a mouth-breather when I sleep... Fingers crossed this helps my sleep! The lady at the drugstore said one of her clients lost 15lbs after starting her cpap which sounds good to me!!

When I got my CPAP machine, they advised me to wear it while watching tv or while sitting ect just to get used to it. I found it helped. But the first night is always the worst. I have had mine now for a year and a half, could not live with out it. Unfortunately I didnt loose weight. Good Luck !!!

That's the same advice I was given, to wear it while watching tv for an hour or so, to get used to breathing normally.
Glad your machine has helped, even if you didn't lose weight I'm sure you must feel more rested!
Thanks

You will be fine. I was a mouth breather as well and that stops pretty darn fast. :)

The first few nights will be a little weird but you will get used to it and you will feel so much better in the morning.

Haha yeah the nurse said I might just automatically keep my mouth closed while wearing the mask - I hope so when I had the sleep test with the nose piece I woke up choking so they switched me to a full face mask, but maybe the pressure was just too high. We will see how it goes! I can't wait to stop feeling so exhausted all the time!

I use the nasal pillows as well as a chin strap. I'm an incurable mouth breather. It took me several weeks to find the right configuration. Keep at it until you find the right thing.

I haven't been shown the nasal pillows or chin strap, but will look in to it if I find sleeping with the mask too uncomfortable. Luckily the ladies at the homecare dept in my drugstore are great so I'm confident I'll find the right solution, if this mask doesn't work :)

Good luck, sweet dreams! I find now it helps me fall sleep, but I do admit it took me sometime to find the right fit but now as silly as this sounds, since my wls my SA is dramatically improving and to think I may not need this! I bet I will miss it!!

Thanks!! Hopefully you won't need the cpap soon!! I'm sure you will adjust to being without it ;) Apparently I just have 'mild' SA that my dr thinks is a direct result of weight, so fingers crossed after my surgery and weight loss I won't need mine either :D

I am a mouth breather too but it did not take me very many nights of the strange feeling of air rushing back out of my mouth for my body to adjust. Hang in there and you may adjust too. If not there you could add a chin strap as someone else did with the nasal pillows.
