Guelph's process

Hello everyone,

I'm right at the beginning of my journey - asked my GP for a referral on Dec. 4. Since I live in Kitchener, I'm assuming I'll eventually have surgery through the Guelph Centre.

I haven't seen many messages from people who have gone through Guelph. I this because Guelph does fewer surgeries than other centres? I also wasn't clear on when I might hear back. Does the centre let you know when they've received your referral or is the first time you hear from them when you get a date for the orientation session? Any idea on how long this might take - I've heard 3 to 6 months but wasn't sure if that was the latest estimate.

I would love to hear form anyone who went through Guelph.

Thanks!

PS 1234godown150, thanks for your message. I tried to reply but the website won't let me send a message for some reason

Welcome to the beginning of your process!!!

First of all I would not assume anything based on where you live!! I am from the Stratford Area and several of my coffee meeting buddies from this area have been sent to several different centers!! As far as the Guelph Centre I went through them and it took almost a year from the date of my referral being sent out to hear anything back from them about my orientation session!! Mind you I almost had my surgery 2 years ago and I have heard that the process is a lot faster than when I was going through it!! Good luck with your journey!!

Hi there...I am going thru Guelph as well

My referral was sent Feb. 14 2013 and I heard around the end of March of the orientation on May 16.  The center sent me out some papers to fill out and tests to have completed thru my GP. I have a lot of co morbidities like diabetes and I've heard this may speed up the process a bit.

My surgery is Feb. 13...so almost one year exactly.

Referral: Feb. 14, 2013; Orientation: May 16, 2013: 1st RN/NUT/SW appt: May 28, 2013; 2nd RN/NUT/SW appt: July 31, 2013; Dr. Agarwal (internist): Aug. 6, 2013; Post Op Class: Nov. 25 2013; Dr. Reed: Dec. 17, 2013; Surgery: February 13,2014

Hi & welcome!  I was referred by my gp  April 18/13. First I heard from Guelph was in July asking if I wanted to go to orIentation.

I am now at the point where I am waiting to hear from Guelph for my pre-op class & told I would probably get a call soon with surgery April 2014.  So it would also be a year.  Word of advise, have all your tests completed before they call - helps speed up gettting into see the RN etc.  I can give you a list of what I needed if you would liike it ...

Hi there -

I'm going through Guelph too.  Hopefully my timeline below gives you an idea about the length of the process.  Just a bit of advice.  After the first set of appointments with the Nurse/Dietician/SocialWrk. do your best to journal and work on cravings.  They are really strict about weight gain between appointments and will hold you up if you are not complying with their program.  To score brownie points winklook into taking the Craving Change workshop soon (Angela Rollman runs one in the area a few times a year). Or if you have insurance coverage look into seeing a therapist to work on Cognitive Behaviour Treatments for overeating -- this is the best thing in the long run.

Good luck!!

Vanessa
