So we did our big family dinner yesterday. and i was exposed to all my families feelings about my surgery, as per usual with my family everyone (save my sister who is still lukewarm on the whole thing) was positive. but i wondered what was everyone elses family responses like. were you able to show the doubters? did people go WOW!

Brag a bit about how you wowed your family!

I may not be there yet, but I'm closer than I was yesterday!

Hi rc,

It's interesting in my situation. Not many people have noticed that I have lost close to 60 pounds. I think what it is for me is that people remember seeing me at this weight and for some reason have blocked out the past ten years when I looked obese! Yes, some people who have not known me all my life have noticed something is different but can't put their finger on it. My neighbour keeps telling me that she loves my haircut , but I think she hasn't figured out that I'm losing weight because my hair is not that different. lol!

I only shared my wls experience with my husband, kids, sister and cousin. That's it. I'm pretty private about it. (except here of course!)

Everyone's situation is different and we all carry our weight differently, although yes, it will interesting to see what other people have noticed along their journey.

Thanks for posting!

Barb

It's true Barb, we do all carry it diferently, and i myself don't really see the difference but my family said they could all see it.

i know it is different for every person. i know i have been very open about my surgery to everyone.your neighbor and her thinking you had a new haircut is really funny,

i dont know if people would know if i hadn't told them about my surgery.

but thank you for replying

It's great that most people were positive! Congrats!

I got a lot of positive feedback too; my elderly aunt hasn't seen me since I lost the first 60 Lbs and now that I'm 130 Lbs down she was blown away and couldn't stop talking about it. She told me to stay the way I am and never gain it back, lol.

My cousins who I only see for Christmas and weddings/funerals were also blown away and I got lots of great compliments and questions about how I did it. I was upfront about having surgery and they were very supportive of my decision. Most of the cousins on that side of the family are retired teachers and I kept getting smiles and nods of approval when they looked at what I was choosing to eat, and how I said no to dessert. I thought that was cute.

My relatives who see me all the time mostly told me I am getting too thin and need to stop losing, lol. I am nowhere near too thin and only just got into the overweight BMI category recently, lol.

It was wonderful to not have to hide from the camera, and to not feel ashamed of how I look this year. Most years I didn't enjoy family gatherings at all because I was too embarrassed and ashamed of how big I was. This year for the first time in so many years I was able to just enjoy myself.

It will definitely happen, and sooner than you think. People were telling me to stop when I was still 200 Lbs. Now that I'm 173.5, they are adamant that I should stop, lol. I'm not at goal but I guess I look so much different now than I did at 304 that they think I should be done.

I know I will never feel like I will want to stop. It feels so good to see less and less of me.

Most people saw me for the first time pregnant. My face has changed drastically and coworkers dont recognize me (i work from home a lot). I am curious to see what i look like post partum and excited to shop as im jn DIRE need of clothes. Its great hearing the positive feedback but i also enjoy the negative as its usually uneducated people (about the surgery) and usually turn them into supporters after educating them!!

I was quite shocked as well... my husband's family wanted to know where the rest of me was...and I told them that it was gone forever.... they didn't ask how I did it which surprised me as they are usually very nosy....lol
