Great idea Pam!

Hi I'm Ida Devers, I just turned 52 on April 9th, I had my surgery Sept 14, 2009 with Dr. Dempsey & Dr. Patel @ Jeanes Hospital in Philadelphia.  My hubby had his surgery January 5, 2006 with Dr. Kowalski @ Temple hospital in Philadelphia.

I am also on facebook; Ida Theisen Devers, my email is [email protected].

I was not overweight my whole life.  My weight started with my first marriage after I'd had my daughters.  First hubby was physically & mentally abusive - I turned to food.  Something I did not learn from my parents.  My mom always cooked extremely healthy, exact portion that was needed for a meal, there were never left overs or enough for seconds.  No junk food or soda was ever found in my parents house.  Mom made everything fresh, nothing came out of a box or a can, fresh fruit was dessert most of the time.  For a treat she'd bake on occasion.

I have two daughters from my first marriage Brianna is 30, Jennifer is 29.  Both still live in South Jersey.  Both girls are married, no grand children.  My youngest has PCOS and her hubby had limited sperm so probably no grands from them.  The oldest has severe back problems and is on heavy narcotics so no grands till she decides to have the surgery and gets off the narcotics.

Gene has no children, he filled up his free time with graduate school; 3 master's degrees and now his Doctorate degree.

We have one kitty named Hider.  She was Gene's cat till I corrupted her.

Gene and I met in 2002 at that time I was thin, he was at his heaviest.  In 2003 he asked me to marry him, and we bought our house after selling the one he'd owned for 30 years.  We got married in 2004 exactly two years to the date of our first date.  We live in north east Philly.

I work for a managed medicad insurance company as the Senior Credentialing and Data Coordinator.  In that title I research a lot of data, as well as complete rate negotiation with non-participating providers and practitioners.  Love my job.  Gene is retired from the city of Philadelphia, and is currently working as a systemic family therapist, part time.

I have completed my BS in Business Administration and will graduate May 8th.  I am almost to the point of deciding between 3 universities where I'm going for my graduate degree.

I have lost 60 pounds, Gene's lost 164 pounds.  He's had his TT, and some other upper body work done and maintains his weight at about 195 - 200.  I am currently fluctuating between 138 & 141 pounds.  Doc's goal for me is 125 - 127.  I'm close.

Prior to having surgery I was on 9 or more perscription medications.  I've had diabetes for 12 years.  I was on two meds for diabetes and could not get it back under control for the last 3 years.  I was on blood pressure meds, cholestrol  meds, and lots of other stuff.  Now I am on nothing except for the vitamins that we need to take for mal-absorbtion.  Prior to having surgery, I started having a lot of problems controlling my weight.  I worked with a nutritionist for 2 years prior to having the surgery and my weight kept climbing.  My gastrologist told me I had a about a year to go and I'd be on the liver transplant list because of my fatty liver.

I had a tough time having and finding a surgeon to do the surgery on me.  I have what is called HIT - I am allergic to Heparin - I'll get a blood clot if given heparin and could die from it.  I had one surgeon tell me I would die on the OR table.  That almost stopped me, however the support I received from this board and from my wonderful hubby kept me fighting.  And I have the best hematologist in the world, he told me there was absolutely no reason I could not have this surgery, we just needed to find the right surgeon.  My gastroenterologist told me I as year away from a transplant list for a liver.  With all that said I was dying.  I could not walk, my entire body hurt, I was not living.  It hurt to get on the Harley - BTW our hobby is riding our Harley cross country.  I've been out to the West coast twice on the Harley and up through Canada twice on the Harley.  As heavy as I was I could no longer do that and I was embarassed at how I looked on the bike.  Gene has always told me I'm beautiful - he is my bestest buddy and friend.  He's my rock, the love of my life.

My hobbies are:  cooking and figuring out how to make all my favorite recipes from mom's old cookbook weight loss surgery friendly as well as coming up with my own new recipes.  Sewing, gardening, reading, crocheting, knitting, the one thing I want to get back into is designing clothes, I used to design all my and my daughters clothes.

And last but not least my/our favorite hobby  is Riding our 95 Heritage Softail Classic.......I always tease Gene and tell him the Harley is the only reason I even considered marrying him

So much for my rambling....It is wonderful to see so many new faces.  Those new faces that will be coming to the Barix meetings I'm looking forward to meeting you!!!

Hi Everyone!

My name is Holly, I'm 35 going on ?? (ok, I'm not willing to admit I'll be that much closer to 40 in October ~ haha) Anyway, I live in Lancaster with my husband, my six yr old son, and a 10 month old pain in the you know what Siberian Husky (but she's so pretty). My husband and I have been married for almost 9 yrs, but we've been together almost 18 yrs.

I share the same story as most…….I've been overweight all my life and I’ve tried many diets and could not keep the weight off. I had no energy to keep up with my son and I wanted to be around for him and see him grow up. It took me almost 2 yrs to make up my mind about having surgery and I finally went to an information session March 2009. I started the program at Bariatric Physician Specialists with Dr. Brader and his team and it was the best decision I ever made for myself.

My highest weight was 370 (at the beginning of 2009) and when I started the program, I weighed 364. Since that time, I’ve dropped 107lbs (30 pre-op and 77 post-op). I had lap RNY 10/13/09 and things have been going very well. My weight loss has slowed significantly, but I'm still on track with the goals that have been provided by Dr. Brader and his team. I'd like to lose another 70 lbs within the next year. I hope that's a realistic goal.

I work at a local college in Lancaster in the Business Office as a fiscal specialist ~ which is a very broad job title, but it's because I'm multi-talented (another way of nicely saying I do many things). lol

I don't post on the message boards frequently and I probably sound like a broken record for stating that each time, but I read the message boards at least 5x/week. This PA group has a wealth of information and I'm appreciative of all the advice every has to offer. I've made many friends from OH and the support group held at Dr. Brader's office.

Since I was slacking in the exercise department, through no fault but my own, I recently started the P90X exercise program. I'm sure many have seen the infomercials. My husband bought it back in January and has been using it ever since and he's doing great. It's definitely a program that kicks your arse in gear and has me doing things I never imagined, but it's been good. I only started it last Monday and I've modified the program requirements and exercises to coincide with my skill level but it's great. I have to thank Ryan at Dr. Brader's office for persuading me to give this program a try. I told him I needed to up my exercise intensity and since joining a gym isn't an option right now, this will definitely help.

If anyone's interested, I'm also on facebook ~ Holly Grimm Sanchez ~ and not everyone in my group of friends knows about the surgery, but I'm at a point in this journey that I don't really care who knows now. I did this to SAVE my life and I only wish I would've done something like this for myself sooner.

I have seen the P90x and am totally intimidated by it....but I've heard you and others say good things about it...so I might have to get over my fear and deal with it :)

Pam - I was also very intimidated by this program and I thought there was no way I'd ever be able to handle it but the program itself offers three options ~ Classic, Doubles, and Lean. I chose the Lean route because it's more cardio intensive and the program intro mentioned that more women tend to choose that. I can't do some of the exercises they do, but I do my best and modify the routine as needed. If you have any specific questions, let me know.

Hi friends!
I am Sara.  I am married  (almost 22 years now) with an 11 year old son who is absolutely fabulous.  Hey Lisa...Sieharra is 11 right..hmmm?  LOL   I had lap RNY due to medical problems in Nov 2009.  Since April 1, 2009 I have lost 112.4 pounds and all the medical issues are gone.  Well I guess technically they are still there, but all of my labs are near perfect and I take no Rx meds now.  The weight is coming off slower now after 5 1/2 months, but at leat it is still coming off.  I too have been overweight since I was in elementary school.  I live about 10 miles from Penn State.  Hey Karen, do you ever come up here to see your daughter?  My son & I love to go to PSU basketball games.  I work out with a trainer twice a week at work.  We have a fitness center with subsidized trainers...it is great.  I have done some sort of stretching/walking/exercising every day since 4/1/09.  i have 2 best friends that walk with me when the weather is nice.
For being healthy and losing over 70% of my excess weight, Geisinger said I was a total success.  I decided to do something selfish, just for me , to celebrate.  I am shopping for a used motorcycle.  I had one years ago and I want one now that I am thinner.  I loved riding, way back when.  I am always thinking of others, doing fpr others and putting others first.  It feels odd to be doing something for me.  I have found the bike I want but the lady wants more than it is worth.  I am still looking...If you see an Orange Honda Shadow VLX deluxe 600 for sale...let me know
