Question about JP drains

I am 8 days out from an anchor cut panniculectomy, and have three drains. The nurse is coming later today, but just wondering from anyones experience, have you had a drain that just kind of filled with air on it's own? My second drain will do that when I sit a certain way. It will do it like 6 or 7 times in a row. It is still draining just fine, just wondering if anyone had this experience or knew why it happens. Maybe it's something I'm doing?

Hi there, Have you opened the drain plug and squeezed the air out of the bulb?  Maybe you have to get the suction started again.  Also, have you "milked" the line? open the drain plug and then squeeze the line to force the air through it and out into the bulb and then that should clear the line. Hope this helps! Angela

HI Angela. Yeah, I've done the whole opening and resqueezing thing, but it makes a bubbly noise and poofs back out lol I have milked it too, but there's nothing in the line right now. I am draining fine though, it  hasn't stopped, so I don't think it's plugged or something like that. It's so weird, just poofing out with air randomly.

Sounds like the drain has a leak and air is getting in the tubing or the bulb.

I know how you feel it scared me to death I could not get mine to stay closed either told my dr he said as long as it is drainning it will be fine I know it sounds gross but try pushing it in the area a bit that is what the nurse did for me & it helped a little ,as they said maybe we are full of hot air lol

lol I thought of that, maybe I am just full of hot air. The nurse came, she checked it. She thought it might have a leak but didn't find anything. She said as long as it is draining it should be ok. And yes, I did push the base in a bit more, it seems to help a bit. I know my drains are pulling at the stitches, so I try to push them back in a couple times a day.

I've not had that experience, but I can only imagine it'd be funny. Does it make a farty noise when you release the air? Hey gotta find some humor in all of this recovering thing huh? I'm a rare one regarding JP drains, aside from the soreness and the fact they get in the way of everything, I love milking the bloodclots out.   Ok call me weird..maybe thats why I went into EMS lol. Hope it resolves itself soon, or finds the "right exit" to emit from. Hoping this made you smile a bit as I know how difficult PS can be. I'm waiting on my next phase of surgery (round 3) and it will involve a TT w/ anchor cut. I'm not looking foreward to it at all :/ I love yall for letting us PS virgins know all the details of what this entails. You are my inspiration! Gentle hugs, Donna
