Hi Everyone!

So here's an update on my IRON count.

So my story was that I went last Wendesday to get a physical for my TT on Wednesday, May 12. Thrusday afternoon they call me that my IRON is too low and that they suggest that I re-schedule my surgery. They called in some IRON pills for me to take 3times a day.

Anyways, Since Friday, I've been eating beans, liver my pills, more beans, more liver, apricots.... Ay, Ay, Ay!!!!
Today my Doc wanted to see me and take more labs (lil cute tiny she doctor).
Im in the room and here she comes in and says to me... "Sandra, I don't know why I didnt see you this pale last week"! You look very pale!!! and your Iron is too low. I told her that I've always had this problem with my iron, even before my gastric bypass. She wants to get labs from my other Primary Doctors. (Well that will be hard to find besides the ones before and after my gatric bypass) I've always have been in ok condition to the point that they wouldn't take labs from me. I told her to get my labs from my RNY Surgeon and to see what were my labs before that surgery. It's normal for me. I feel fine.
She then walks me to her office and tells me that it will be months before my iron is back to normal and that I wouldn't wan to hear that.... OF COURSE I don't want to hear that!!!! And I told her straight out that I was soooo upset and bad mad that she doesn't want to clear me and go by my labs before my RNY. They were the same I bet. I'm stressing so bad. Now I had to tell my boss that it might not be this Wednesday. GEEESHHH. I had such a hard time telling him that I was having surgery, now it's my doctor. Things are set out like they should be at work.

*** BUT listen to this people! My Primary doctor mailed me my report on my phyical and it said that "I WAS CLEAR FOR SURGERY" !!!!! I DON"T GET IT!

My Surgeon's office is not going to re-schedule my hospital till tomorrow. She wants to know my results from today.

TO BE CONTINUED.......

::hugs::  Sorry you had bad news.

Was your RNY open or laproscopic?  Not sure but that could be the difference.  If it was laprscopic then there wasn't as much blood.  I was anemic prior to RNY, I could never pass the iron tests for donating blood.

RNY, I was cleared, no questions about low iron came up.  For a hysterectomy, it came up but was given Repliva as a prescription iron to take.  Knee surgery it wasn't an issue, I'm assuming because it was not an open procedure.

I had my pre-admission testing yesterday and over the weekend I increased the amount of iron rich foods I eat.   So know you are not alone on this one.

Hi there,

Is there any way you can go in today and get an iron infusion? Or, set one up for right after surgery?

Just an idea...I know this can be stressful. Let us know what they say today!

Good Morning Ladies!

Well it's 8am here in S. California and I'm waiting for 8:30am to call for my lab work from yesterday.
@ work they already started asking me if it's still on for tomorrow or not..... My answer is "Duhhhhh"! Hehehehe!

Anyways @ Lisa - My RNY was Laproscopic so I can totally understand why it's different.
@ Cleos_mom - My Primary doctor did send these same papers to my surgeon and they see that I have been cleared. They are the ones that told me that I was cleared. I wish that my doctor could have said yesterday.... "You know what Sandra let's do an Iron infusion now", but she didn't, even though I brought it up. ;-?
@ mommyteacher - I will keep you guys posted later on today.

* Yesterday, I didn't know if I should continue to cleaning out the house (mop, i don't mop everyweek) or leave it alone.... Grrrrrrr! I hate not knowing what I'll be doing tomorrow.

As frustrating as it is (and I may very well be posting something similar - and you have no idea what I've been eating this past weekend in addition to my iron pills to help make sure my iron was okay)... they are taking these precautions for your health.  As much as we want this skin gone, we have to be as healthy as possible - of course you know that.

Remember that - I may need you to remind me of that next week.

Ahhh Lisa,

You are probably right. It is now 11:06am in the morning here and they faxed over the lab results from yesterday. I rushed over to fax them over to my surgeon's office and the surgeon office calls me and tells me that she does not see any updated iron results. I called the Primary doc office and the nurse tells me that they didn't take labs for IRON yesterday. I'm sooooooo upset I just want to cry. I don't know what to do now.

I figure I"ll wait till next Wednesday and continue feeding myself all of this IRON FOOD. I'll be IRON WOMAN next week.
I'm so upset with this doctor, I just picked up the phone and I'm moving to another Primary doctor and I will sign off on having all my medical files mailed to my new primary doctor.

I'm FUMING!!!!

Thanks for listening to me.

Stop - breathe.

Call your surgeon's office - tell them that the primary dr didn't take iron labs and see if they can put the order in for you to go to the hospital lab to get them drawn now.  It's not a fasting test so you should be okay to get them done now.

When I use to give blood, the blood bank told me "just eat raisins before you give blood."  Not sure if that would really be that much of an iron boost AND you want to make sure your iron levels stay up for surgery too.

I would tell you what I've been eating, but it would make you wretch.  Oddly enough it's a dish from my heritage and I grew up liking it - then I found out how it was made.  For surgery, I've decided I will do whatever I have to do.

I'm not sure if you want to know this - but I just heard from my surgeon's office and my iron was good.

When I googled "foods rich in iron" I found out a couple of things -

1 - although spinach is high in iron, it also contains an enzyme that inhibits absorbtion... and I have always eaten a lot of spinach so that explains why I still had problems.

2 - animal sources of iron are the best absorbed and...

3 - the highest meat product with iron is black pudding, aka blood pudding, aka blood sausage.  That's what I've been eating.  If you cannot handle that, you might look into the marrow of animal bones.  I know my mom use to eat the marrow when she made bone-in stuff.

I know - it's lunch time out there and probably not what you needed to hear right now.
