Urgent help from post op surgery
Hello all, I had surgery on 7/17 and I feel great as far as eating I am not putting 64oz but I understand that is normal. My question is I have an excrutiating pain on the left side of my back rib. I don't believe it is my lungs because I am breathing fine. Has anyone else experienced this pain? I cannot lay on back because it hurts I cannot sit back at times because it hurts. Please give me some advice. I called my doctors office but he is 3 hours a way and if it gets worse tonight I will go tomorrow. He believes it may be muscle spasms. Have you had these. Also I have not had a bowel movement is this normal.
I guess I have not felt the results of the pain from my stomach, because this back pain has been a 10 steady.
Thanks for any advice.

Elisa;
I'm not sure what's causing your back pain, but you need to take some Milk of Magnesia to facilitate a BM. I can't believe they released you from the hospital without one. That was one of my milestones before I could go home.
With regard to the back pain, it could be a few things. 1. Pressure from the gas they filled you with (assuming you had laproscopic RNY); 2. Possibly from sleeping in a different bed some of the recent nights; 3. From sleeping in a different position as a result of your RNY (I'm a tummy sleeper, so it was an adjustment for me the first 4 weeks post-op to sleep on my back or side); 4. Some other problem.
If it's gas pressure, walking will help release the gas. If your pain is a 10, you really should see a medical professional ASAP. Is there an emergency room nearby?
Blessings,

I had that pain as well. It moved down and then finally went away after a couple of days. My doctor felt that it was a muscle spasm. He said he would be concerned if it were on my right side, but because it was on my left, there really wasn't anything to worry about. I took my pain meds and tried to lay still. But if you are worried about it, by all means, go see your doctor.
I didn't have a BM when I left the hospital, and they didn't require me to. My doctor told me that it would come in good time. I didn't go the entire week I was in the hospital, and the gas drove me nuts. I finally went when I got to stage 2 (Full liquids) at home, which was about 10 days after my surgery. I still don't go every day, but I go at least three time a week (and it's healthy), so I'm not concerned.
