carbonated drinks
I have been to my initial consultation, but have spoke with some others that you can not have any sodas. I am just curious because i am addicted to diet caffine free coke and I want to know if this is something else I need to start taking care of now so I can get myself prepared? I know this is silly, but I am a coke a cola addict.
I was told by the nutritionist that visited me in the hosptial that carbonated drinks will cause your pouch to stretch. You have to think about what is best for you. I know it's hard, but perhaps if you start weining yourself now, it won't be so hard to give up. Besides, I heard that the carbonation is painful at first.
Dr. Warnock told me not to drink carbonated drinks because it will cause the "dumping" syndrone and none of us want to experience that. They say that "dumping" syndrone It is very painful and can cause vomiting and rapid heartbeat. I am very careful to do exactly what my doctor has told me and I've had no problems even though there are many things that I used to have and can no longer eat. Doctor knows best.
Every surgeon seems to have a different take on this subject. Mine said none for 8 weeks.
This was one of the hardest things for me to give up ---- but I did!
Now I have a can of CF SF Dr. Pepper every now and then. I mostly drink Crystal Lite Lemonade or water now.
Preop I used to down 2, 2 liter bottles of the stuff every day
There is no proof carbonation will stretch the pouch. Also - anything may cause you to dump so that doesnt matter. There are a few reasons they say to stay away from soda... for some they cant handle the carbonation - it will make you gassy and "fill up" your pouch. I am a month out and had a sip and thought I was going to explode until I burped. Another reason is soda (even diet) is a dieurtic - so basically by drinking soda you are undoing all the water you drank in that day. Lastly, soooo many people are addicted to soda - they dont want you drinking it instead of water. Also its an "old habit" doing one old habit can lead you onto other old habits. Soda now and then is ok if you can handle it... they just dont reccomend it become part of your daily routine.
I feel like I wrote your email! I was the BIGGEST caffeine free diet coke junkie out there -- up to 6 weeks ago. I knew I had to give it up to be successful on this new weigh of life and made my mind to do just that. When I came home from the initial dr. appt wherein I scheduled my surgery date -- I immediately went to the pantry and counted -- (cause I would buy the soda by the cases). I had 18 sodas left. So I bought some crystal lite (which I thought was the nastiest stuff on earth at that point) and slowly started cutting down my intake until all 18 sodas were gone. Then I attempted (and still battle somewhat) to adjust to just crystal light and water. I did not have diet coke up to two and a half weeks before my surgery except one day -- I had an appt -- got into one of my habits and stopped for a burger and of course ordered the soda (w/out thinking). Then I took a taste of it and spit it out! I was shocked! It didn't taste good to me anymore! That was my last sip. So it's been over a month now and I'm fine w/out it. You will be too. Also, I dropped 10 lbs IMMEDIATELY when I gave up the caffeine free diet coke! And my skin looks healthier. I guess it REALLY is a diaretic, eh?
YOU CAN DO IT. You will change a lot of habits and after a while, you'll start forming new, healthier habits. Good luck and let me know how it goes....
My drink of choice was SF/CF Dr. Pepper. I slowly stopped drinking it up to a week before surgery. I do like the Crystal Light (and generic versions) so that wasn't a problem. After surgery, I opened a SF/CF Dr. Pepper and let it go flat (I used to drink this all the time) but now it tastes absolutely horrible. My new find is Lipton Green Tea and Lipton Ice Tea in the single serving pouches. I just love it and really don't miss my pop now.
I had the surgery 5/16/2006 and I have not tried to drink soda. I was a Sprite drinker and I still want one but I was told I could have one if I let it go flat. I dont like flat drinks so I have not had one. I went to a support group meeting and this one man said he tolerated sodas fine but most people said that the gas it caused bothered them and that is why they do not drink them. Renee'
I also had to give up the Coke. This was the hardest thing I ever did because I grew up on it. My family owned a bottling plant and we drank cases of Coke, Sprite, and flavored sodas from the time I was very small. My mother even fed me coke syrup when I was sick! Anyway, I slowly weaned myself off it over about three months and have not had any since. I still want it, but as others have said, it is a diuretic and is not the best choice for post-op patients. Good Luck.
