Protein Supplement - Time of Day?
I don't know if it is preferred but my nut told me the other day that I should keep track of protein and if I am a bit low to up it in my shake in the evening. Eventually if I understand it right they want us to get all or most of our protein from our food and use the supplements only as absolutely necessary....like when we are ill or something.
But for now they have me doing the shakes mid morning and evening....leaving mid afternoon for protein snack.
First thing you need to remember is that every NUT and SURGEON is different, therfore you will get all different answers on here. As for me, I am 7 weeks post op, and my surgeon still has me using as many protein supplements as I want to get enough in, there is just no way I can near enough protein through food right now, I just can't eat very much at all. So I have 21 grams of protein in the morning for breakfast, and then another 21 grams around 10:30 for a snack. Then I have maybe 10 grams of protein through food for lunch...maybe. And then I have another 21 gram protein bullet around 2:00. That way I have gotten in all of my required protein for the day, and whatever I am able to eat for dinner is any extra. I try not eat food after 7:00, so thats why I like to get all the protein in early. Hope that helps.
Good luck!
Not weird at all...I was told to have them at around 10-10:30 and 2-2:30...that when I started soft food on out. In the beginning when on liquids I was told to drink a 4oz protein drink/shake starting at 8am to 8pm every 2 hours for minimum of 45 grams - goal 60 grams of protein. From 9am to 7pm 4oz of varied SF liquids for a goal of a total of 48oz including protein drinks/shakes. There's a huge variety of qualifying liquids.

Wasn't told a time. But I only have a shake if I haven't gotten in enough protein in the day, so only at night. I am a firm believer in getting protein thru food, not a shake. So the only time to have it is at night when you know your protien count for the day. As it is said in the wording, it is a supplement, meant only if you can't get it otherwise, so only at the end of the day. I believe, just like food, your body absorbs it any time all the same. Just like there is proof that late night snacking doesnt put on weight, most people add too many calories in the late night snacking, it's the calories no matter when eaten that put the weight on. If you plan those calories, you wont gain. Same with protein, if you eat it late, you absorb it just like any other time.
