Does everyone have a catheter during surgery?

When I start to think about a catheter, I get woozy.  Does everyone get one?  Was it placed after you were under anesthesia?  Is it painful to remove?

I did have a urinary catheter...and it was placed AFTER I was knocked out.  I didn't even feel it there while it was in.  When it was time to remove it, the nurse just said "Ok...take a deep breath and exhale slowly"...and while I exhaled she removed it.  It wasn't pleasant...but not the most painful thing I've ever experienced.  On a pain scale of 1-10 (10 being the worst) I'd say it was about a 4.  Don't stress over it...it really isn't all that bad.

I did not have a catheter.  I had laproscopic surgery and had to stay in the hospital for 2 days.  Unless they put it in after they knocked me out and took it out before I woke up, I did not have one.  I hope you don't have to have one because they don't sound like much fun!

I remember having a catheter after I had my daughter about 2 yrs ago and it was great!  I loved it because I didn't have to get up to pee for a whole day!  LOL  They let me have one because I had such a draining labor having the baby and they wanted me rest and not have to get up to use the bathroom.  They wanted me to conserve my energy for healing from having my baby and getting better.

But with this surgery, I didn't have a catheter in the hospital.  It was actually good to get up and move around to get to the bathroom.   They had these leg compression devices on my lower legs though, that would squeeze my legs a little and then let go every few minutes.   Those were great because they help prevent formation of blood clots because I was laying down so much after surgery.   So not everyone has to have one post op and it's not painful when they remove a catheter if you do have to have one.

I had one.  I was actually worried that they would put it in while I was conscious.  But to my relief they didn't.  And when they removed it, It didn't hurt.  Could've been that morphine they had me on.    Good Luck!

I had one.  but I had one when I had my daughter as well.  they aren't that bad.  it was out late the first night post op.  I had complications and had to go back under the knife a few days later.  when I came to I had no catheter but was informed that if I didn't give out enough urine I'd have another.  of course I didn't so they put in another and i was awake.  it wasn't nearly as bad as I expected.

you will be fine~

I didn't have one with my rny.  But, I have had them in the past and they are nothing to worry about.  No pain at all.  When it was taken out, I just had a little twinge like for a couple seconds of burning like I had to go to the bathroom really bad (or like a UTI) but really, it was only for a couple seconds while they were actually taking it out.  Do not worry about it.

I had one- for about 24 hours. They put it in after I was knocked out and then took it out 24 hours later. It was great cause I didn't have to get up during the night the first night to go to the bathroom. It didn't hurt me at all when it was taken out- just a funny pulling feeling for about 2 seconds-

Thank you all for answering...I appreciate it.  I still get woozy thinking about it but it sounds like I'll be okay.

I don't get woozy thinking about the surgery itself, but a catheter, yes.  Weird, huh?
