how bad for me is a plain baked potato?

My nutritionist said it was ok to try adding things like potato, rice and pasta. Now I know I can't go back to eating these things the way I did pre-op, but how bad for me is it to have just a little once in a while? Today I took my daughter out for lunch at Wendy's. I was going to just have a little chili but I thought about how the nut said I could have the potato.. and I've always been a big fan of dipping fries in chili, so my curiosity over how the baked potato would taste dipped in it won. I ate mostly the meat and beans in the chili, but I did dip a few bites of potato and it was delicious! So delicious in fact that I'm thinking it can't possibly have been good for me!

Low fat mashed potatoes and baked potatoes with light margarine are allowed on my plan, but as always protein first.

I would be careful with the chili and potato thing because of the carbs in the beans but do whatever is on your plan. My plan limits carbs to 30 per meal. Of course right now I'm not eating anywhere near enough to get that many carbs. When in doubt, call your nut.

I love potatoes - but since it is pure white carbs - I avoid then as much as I can.  The problem is that they turn to sugar almost instantly.  And that is no good to us.  I know that I was/am a carb addict and as long as I do not eat simple carbs - I do not crave them. Be careful that a bit of potatoes does not turn into - a lot of potatoes.  Now you need to concentrate on protein protein and protein.  There is already a lot of good carbs in chili - try to hold off the simple carbs for as long as you can.  i noticed that if I had simple carbs, even with standard calories for the day and proteins - my weight loss would stall.  Now - almost at goal (actually at goal) I still try to avoid my "trigger" foods, so I can concentrate on more complex carbs.
FYI: be careful with rice and pasta - even now, 9 months post op - I do not handle it very well.  It swells in my pouch and makes me very uncomfortable.

I think a potato is alright...I just dont' do bread or pasta much at all but potatoes are pretty okay. I have them on the weekends with my eggs (hash browns or home fries) and mashed are Great! alittle gravy and that's heaven...but I always eat my protein first and leave the potatoes for after the veggies (don't consider the potato a veggie)
Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!

One of my most favorite meals is a steak and baked potato with asparagus. Mmmmmm. Since I do it so infrequently I have no problem enjoying every last bite I can fit in. YUM!

Enjoy a wide variety of foods your body tolerates. You can enjoy a baked potato once in a while! Nummy!!!!

I personally stay away from potatos.  I LOVE them. For me there is not nutriotnal value in the baked potato.  Here is an idea. How about making some Sweet Pototo Fries and dipping that in some chili.  Cut up the sweet potato like FF and spray with some Olive Oil PAm and cook them in the oven.

I do like the Wendy's chili.  On thursday nights I get that and a side salad and porr the chili over the salad for dinner. I have class that night.  I always tell the lady in the drive through, NO dressing, but they always stick some Ranch in my bag. UGH!

What is the difference, nutritionally speaking, between regular and sweet potatoes? I know that I've heard sweet potatoes are better for you, but I've never heard why and the very word sweet frightens me! :)

Sweet potatoes are more complex carbs then traditional white which means you'll have less impact on blood sugar levels. Don't be afraid of the sweet potato - it's actually very good for you.

If your NUT approved a white potato then eat a white potato. Don't know why they've gotten such a bad rap for WLS folks but I personally find it ridiculous. I know I didn't get SSMO eating stupid  baked potatoes. It was the cousin Little Debbie that did it. In the big picture white potatoes are the red headed stepchildren of the real-simple-carb-insulin-impacting-family because they're just not that bad as other simple carbs. Sheesh.

At one month out I'd say  - stay away from the potatoes. You need to be worring about getting in enough protein right now, not carbs.     If you were 6 or even 4 months out my answer might be different.
