We have a Walmart, Krogers, and HEB in our town. None of them carry FAGE or Oikos. They do carry "Greek Gods" but it's all flavored and sugary. So.......
How do I convince my grocer to carry these items? Is there a way to ask them to order it for me?

Good luck. Right now stores can hardly keep ahead of the chopping block...Alot of places are closing and we're losing 3 Albertsons in our area. I would try and find a good equivalent (Dannon Light n Fit is good, low sugar) instead. I'm sure the closures are not over yet. We may be stuck with one stinking Walmart and nothing else around here...
Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!

Do you have a Whole Foods or Trader Joes?  Whole Foods carries Fage and TJ's has their own greek yogurt.

The grocery store I usually go to here in Iowa doean't sell either one of them either. So I went to their website, there was a place to email them so I did! I explained to them that more and more people are having weightloss surgery and that we need this! I got an email back this morning from them, apparently each store orders their own stuff, so she was forwarding my email to the manager here. We'll see. See if yours has a website, email them.

But, there is another grocery chain here, I went there yesterday and they DO carry Fage. I am so excited....i also found lots more sugar free stuff there...looks like I'm switching grocery stores.

If you can buy it - make it yourself.
Greek yogurt is strained plain yogurt.

Buy a regular plain, fat free yogurt, strain it (24 hrs) and there you have it.  It is easier to buy, but when they do not have it - I just buy the other kind, strain it at home (in the fridge) and have my "greek" yogurt.

The "water" that you get after strainning - you can drink to ad more probiotics to your diet.

FYI: I used to live in Greece and we made the strained yogurt (though we did not called it "greek") all the time.

Is the protein count on homemade as high as Greek yogurt.  I think most people favor the greek for that protein moreso than the taste.

Yes.  The more you strain (longer) the more you "condensed" it.
I get usually 2/3 volume of the regular yogurt. You just strain the "whey water" out of the yogurt. the protein stays in the thick yogurt.  You get "condensed" yogurt. i.e 8 oz of regular yogurt will yield 5 oz of "thick" Greek yogurt.
if 8 oz or reg yogurt has 14 gr protein - then 5 oz of  condensed "Greek" yogurt will have 12-14 gr of protein (there are some protein that stays in whey water, but not much), and same calories as 8 oz of regular yogurt.
By straining - you remove the "water"  Straining more - will get you the "cheese".

I have yogurt strainers, but a nice big coffee strainer (clean) will do the job.  I place that in the fridge for 24-48 hrs to get the desired consistency.

i buy the qt size plain non-fat yogurt and strain to get the "Greek" yogurt. Or you can make yogurt from scratch and then strain it (that how we did in Greece).

Ah...I see now...I guess there is no magical properties to the greek yogurt then?  I may have to buy some mesh or cheese cloth and try this one of these days.

Nice coffee (SS or plastic) coffee filter will do just fine.
something like that works great... and it is easy to clean

You just need to make sure you have suspended so the yogurt will not sit in "water" and it is allowed to drip.

I have an old one like that (from an old coffee maker)
http://www.amazon.com/Cuisinart-GTF-Gold-Tone-Filter/dp/B000 1IRRLG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=kitchen&qid=1235424409&sr=1-2
and I use that all the time.  The strained yogurt is great for dips, instead of sour cream (your family will not know the difference, and you can keep it in sour cream box so even the comany you are having - will not know the difference)

I tried to use normal "paper" coffee filter - but it was too messy for me.

If you have an old pillow cover (well washed - de-linted), cut a sqaure piece, put is on a strainer, put yogurt into that, leave for 24 hrs in the fridge.  The cloth - it was also messy - you have to tra**** or wa**** the strainer i just soaked in warm water, or was in dishwasher.

I ike coffee starainers - since there are small, do not take a lot of place in the fridge.  I usually ise large soup mugs to rest the coffee strainer into.

Here is selection, if you decided you will use it...

They say strain it overnight - but I live mine for 24 hrs, and I will drink the whey water - it has freindly bacteria, and the right accidity  - good for us.
