I think my protein bullet SHOT me!

Has anyone had an adverse effect from drinking a protein shot? Let me explain what happened and maybe someone can shed some light on it.

I bought the protein bullet (proteinMORPH) at GNC today. I was driving to my friends house and took a sip of it. About 20 seconds later I started to get VERY flushed in the face, felt like someone had a heat lamp beaming on it, I became very short of breath, my face started to feel a lot of pressure like someone was trying to blow me up. My stomach was in pain. Suddlenly it felt like pins and needles were on my face, hands and feet. It started to diminish but I was left with a horrible rash down my arms and chest for about 45 minutes.

Weird, huh? Can anyone explain? The protein bullet had 210 cal/ 0g fat/ 0g carbs/ 0sugars and 45g protein. It was a 3oz bullet and I drank about 1/3 of it.

Im not a doc., but edound like an allergic reaction to me.  Don't test it again.  Food allergies get worse with each subsequent exposure.  Talk to your doctor as soon as possible to confirm this. If it is confirmed it will help to avoid any further problems.

Was there a large amount of niacin in it?  That's what taking a lot of niacin can do to a person. You have to build up to higher doses of niacin.

Jena--

I agree with the previous poster - I think you have a food allergy, and your reaction was really fast.

First of all, don't drink that stuff again.  Next, bring the bottle with you to see your doctor to find out if there's an ingredient that commonly causes reactions.  Hopefully, you'll be able to get to the root cause of this.

You may be prescribed an Epi pen (a shot containing epinephrine) to carry with you at all times in case you have such a reaction again.  Each subsequent reaction typically comes on more quickly and more severely.  My last food reaction got me into the ER - and I reacted again once I got home after being pumped up with drugs - it was really scary.  I now carry an Epi pen with me at all times.  You might want to start carring Benadryl in your purse just in case you have a reaction again - it will help slow it down until you can get urgent medical care.

I don't mean to scare you, but I've learned the hard way to take food allergies seriously.  Please follow up with your doctor.

I wish you all the best.

Did it have b vitamins? I know 5 hour energy will do that sometimes. The flush probably came from a sudden influx in concentrated form. Check the label.

It could be high sugar or the Niacin (B vitamins). Flushing ususally is that or allergies. When I have walnuts my face flushes and my throat swells up (like it's trying to close) but when I have sugar issues or niacin...that's usually without the throat swelling.

I've learned usually Energy drinks = high sugar or high caffeine...not high protein. Even at GNC.
Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!

I ended up at the ER with the same hot rash all over my body after drinking a bullet (ProSlam 45, I think). The Dr there looked up the ingredients and said that it is a know reaction in some people to something in those things. It is not a food allergy per say, but a reaction to one of the chemicals in the bullets.

Stay away from those suckers!!  I have been told since then that the kind of protein isn't the kind we need....

Sounds like Niacin, it hits me the same way.  The bullets are poorer quality protein and collagenized so we can't absorb enough from them anyway.  They're not a good protein choice for WLS folks.

Many of those bullets have the wrong kind of protein. Stick with the standard whey isolate protein. You may want to check out Vitalady.com to check about samples--small fee for each individual serving. This is far cheaper then buy the bulk sized proteins. My profile blogs and story talk about the protien poweders I've tried. At 3 years, I still rely on a generic whey isolate protein powder I found that mixes easily with cold or cooked foods. 3T has 25 gr of protein, and it's unflavored, not gritty, and doens't clump when mixed.
