Yes, I still forget sometimes that I have altered my anatomy.  I was so parched after a client meeting today that I grabbed a water and started chugging.   A split second later, I realized what I was doing, stopped immediately, squeezed my eyes shut and waited for the pain.  I held my breath and waited...I waited so long I started turning blue; no pain???  So I opened my eyes (that were shut so tight I was seeing stars, mind you) and immediately wondered; what did I do?  Did I stretch my stoma, or my pouch? Why can I gulp water?  So I took another sip fully expecting back up in my throat...nothing!!!!!!  Ahhhhhhhhhhhh.....

Can someone help a 3 month post-op here?  Why am I capable of gulping water?  This is totally freaking me out!!!

I'll be pacing frantcially until someone answers!

Thanks,
April

I was able to gulp water at about the same time (I'm 2 weeks ahead of you).   It's perfectly natural as I understand it.  Explains why we as newly postop can't even come close to drinking as much as postops much further out are able to drink.

You are not swollen from the surgery.  I can gulp water too.  I try not to, but I do.

I've been gulping water for a long time now and the reason is, is that your stomache has a stoma now and not a pyloric valve.  Its kind of like a funnel so on an empty stomach liquids go right on through.  Its the reason we don't drink after we eat because it will wash the food down so we are hungry quicker.

The only thing that slows me down when drinking is that I LOVE ice cold drinks and they give me a slurpee headache if I drink them to fast.

This is a GOOD thing...not a bad thing.  Be grateful that you are able to get all your fluids in easily.  So many people struggle with this.

I have never had any limitations on how much i could drink at once,,, by that i mean it has never bothered me to drink fast, I look at it as a good thing,,, since it is easier for me to get plenty of water in every day.  Trust me, your stomach will tell you if it doesn't like something! :)  lol

This is normal and a good thing. More water in, more weight lost.

I never had to sip. Not even coming home from the hospital. I've always had a large tolerance for liquids, and I don't think anything of it. Your pouch as a hole at the top and the bottom, drinking liquids isn't going to stretch it.

Perfectly normal. BUT: if you regularly gulp water down you may get trapped wind. I know I do. Many a comic hour spent with my daughter belching out the ABCs. Funny but painful.

Before the surgery I kept putting things off. I was never good enough. One of the benefits of WLS is that you start to believe in yourself. Check out my blog:

I am so glad you asked this! I can also gulp water and other drinks like crystal light! Good to know it's normal.
