I keep GAINING a lot of weight at 5 weeks out, getting very depressed

Hi Guys

Last week I gained 5 kilograms (about 11 pounds) and was very depressed about it.  I vowed to stay of the scales for a while. This week went very well, I felt better and my inches are going down, my clothes fit better and more importantly: I am getting energy back and more so than before surgery. I do a lot of housework and walking and I generally feel good. I can eat everyhting (meaning: i tolerate all foods up till now, of course I do not take sugar, alcohol, white starches etc etc)

So yesterday I decided to weigh again because I felt things were moving in the right direction, and it had been a full week. Well... another 2 kilograms GAINED! So that's 7 kilograms (15,5 pounds) in 2 weeks GAINED.

Now I know what you are going to say: throw the scale away, focus on the feeling good etc, and i TRY, but it still is getting me very down. Also because in 5 years of reading about wls, I NEVER saw people gaining so much weight at 5 weeks out. Stalls OK, I knew about them and would kill for just a normal stall at this point. People gaining a few pounds, OK, also prepared. But this much, so eraly out? It gets me down beyond words.

So now I lost about 13 kilograms (29 pounds) pre op and only 5 kilograms (11 pounds) post op in 5 weeks. Could have done that without slahshing my innards.

I also know I am retaining fluids, because it can not be fat, I do not eat nearly enough to gain fat. I am at about 800 cals a day, so that is not bad for 5 weeks right? My legs have swollen en my hands as well. Maybe I should try to drink even more.

So I know all this and I know what kind of advice I would gove to some one in my situation, but it just blows big time and I wanted to vent that. I already am having a hard time with my father dying 3 weeks ago and such, and now this RNY seems useless. BLAH! I need it to be 2011 ASAP and I need some worrds of encouragement

It does sound like you are retaining fluids. There is NO WAY you could be gaining weight on 800 calories a day. Have you been consuming a lot of sodium? I know in the liquid stage when I was doing soups it was really hard to keep the sodium down. I have found that when I do have a lot of salt I definitely will gain weight.

I would ask your doctor because this does not sound normal.

I know :-( I even tried 2 scales to be sure the one was right. It is depressing

The only thing I struggeled with is fluis intake I was at 50 OZ maximum so since yesterday I upped it to at least 70 oz, maybe that will help a bit.

I follow the rules, eat a lot of protein and very few carbs (we are a very different country with very different rules, we eat a LOT of carbs bread and rice and potatoes and so on, but for now I only eat a crakcer sometimes with my protein)

I will also start to up my protein. So far have been doing it from food alone and some protein icecream at night, which puts me at 50-60 gramsd orso per day. That should upped.

Any suggestions for 5 weeks out at how many OZ water, how many protein grams and how many cals I should be taking? My program has very little info on this, over here they just say: well try everything you like and eat small meals, you can try litteraly everything (of course i disagree) They also stat you only need a multi to start with, so that is why I turn to this board for better more advanced advice :-)

(by the way I take 2 multi's and calcium, I am adding B12 and iron once it comes in the mail from the us)

I just wanted to let you know that I understand how frustrating this must be. There is no way you have gained 15 lbs in 2 weeks in fat. It must be water weight. The only thing I can suggest is to really increase the water and protein. I drink about 100 oz when you include water, herbal tea and protein drinks. I also increased my protein up to about 100 grams. I drink 3 protein drinks a day. There is no way I could eat enough to get in enough protein in a day.
Please don't get discouraged. Just hang in there and hopefully soon you will see a big drop on the scale.

Thanks, I'll try and up my oz to 100 as well, counting the protein and tea. A LOT better than the 50 oz per day I was having so far

any idea on how many cals or fat gram you are per day?

On Fitday.com it shows that I got 813 calories, 27.4 fat, 19.2 carbs and 105.7 protein the other day so I would guess that is about average.

You definitely need to talk to your doctor about this. It is not normal to have this kind of weight gain after this surgery.

Good luck!
