Sleeping Problems
I had my RNY in July of 2009. I had sleep apnea at that time and that has since gone away. However, I still have trouble sleeping. It's difficult to fall asleep and it's always difficult to stay asleep. I wake up between 2-3am and have trouble getting back to sleep.
Has anyone else experienced this or know of patients who have this problem? If so, do you know what causes it and what can be done to get back on a normal sleeping pattern without medication. I've tried Melatonin and am currently on Lunesta. I'd prefer not to be on any meds if possible.
Thanks.

I have the same problem! I used to be an 8-10 hour sleeper. Now I only sleep 5 hrs max! I'm rested most times. It's most aggravating trying to fall asleep. And I also wake up about 2 hours into my sleep. I haven't had it checked out. I tried over the counter sleeping aids but they made me foggy. One brand acted like a side effect of Ambien - I found myself sleepwalking and texting!!! I just figured it was because I'm not "Fat and Lazy" (I REALLY was) anymore and my metabolism is working better, and my body knows when it's time to stop resting....

I've tried Ambien and a few other type of drugs. One morning, after the Ambien, my husband told me about a phone call. I don't remember the phone ringing, the conversation or the fact I was up and willing to drive. That scared me that I stopped taking it. I'm tired in the morning. The Lunesta does let me sleep, but I'm a bit tired first thing in the morning and I have to take it before 11pm. It still only lets me sleep about 5 hours. It's just so frustrating. I'd like to know if this is caused by the surgery or the change in our bodies since surgery.
I had stopped using the CPAP quite a while ago, but I had the official study done to confirm I no longer have sleep apnea - thank goodness. I just wish I knew why sleep is alluding me. Just looking at the hour and I should be asleep but I'm just now getting tired. I know I will hate the alarm clock at 6am.
We bought a new mattress and I now sleep very well. About 3-4 weeks after surgery I just really noticed how much my hips hurt when sleeping on my side.
But then I'm only 14 weeks out, you're much farther out than that. I've heard others in our support group say they just have more energy than they know what to do with and don't sleep more than 3-4 hours but wake up feeling rested and ready to go again. They just miss sleeping.
Nearly two years out and this has been my chief complaint. I cant sleep and would love so desperately to get some!
I do take ambien on occasion. All that does however is puts me in a sleep really fast and wakes me up 4 to 5 hours later.
Woke up at 4.50am this morning. The whole family is alseep, no one is working or going to school yet here I am grrrrr
