Highlight or dying hair?!?

Does anyone know if dying or highlighting hair after RNY is okay?!? I have some big events coming up but with how fragile the hair is afterwards and thinning out is it okay to highlight or dye? If we can't, how long do we have to wait until we can?!?

If it's dangerous I should be dead by now. Go ahead and color your hair, don't think you need to wait until the hair grows back. Our hair isn't "Fragile" - it's just thinning and nothing you can do will stop the shedding or slow it down, what will fall out is going to fall out no matter what you do. Nothing will make it worse or better. Plus -- dying your hair will plump up the hairs and make it look thicker.

Not sure, but I don't remember not coloring my hair when it was thinning.  I colored mine on schedule and did not notice that it hurt anything.

As Pam said, our hair isn't 'fragile' after surgery, and as long as whatever you are doing isn't likely to make it fragile, such as chemical perming or straightening, you should be fine. Coloring can actually coat the hair and make it look fuller. I dyed my hair without skipping a beat after my surgery and it did impact my hair loss at all. I hope that you go ahead and work with your stylist to put together a look that makes you feel fabulous.

Before RNY I lost 127 lbs and lost about half my hair. At the time I had dark auburn hair, so since my hair was so thin you could see my scalp. So I decided, so my scalp wouldn't be so obvious, I dyed it blond.....It worked!!! I've kept it that way for 11 yrs now. My RNY is in 2 weeks so about 1 week ago I got it dyed so maybe I won't have to dye it just after surgery.

I don't think it hurt your hair any either actually if you do highlights it will make you hair look thicker and I am not sure how much you have lost but any little bit helps.

No.  It's not.  You'll be fine.  In fact, it's a good way to reward yourself for all your hard work!
