Only the 30 minute before thing. Which, after my pouch matured and was healed I stopped adhering to. I drink right up until I eat now and I still get full just fine.

hard to sort out what I learned from them and what I got from here.

Drink carbonated beverages will stretch your pouch.

I think t we might have gotten this one... we were for sure told not to drink carbonated beverages, but the primary reason was that it could cause pain and bloating - especially with new sutures and "could possibly" stretch the pouch.

Drinking with a straw will stretch your pouch.

I think that this was exactly the same as above, except the rational on this one was about swallowing air and not knowing how much you were drinking and how that could be bad early out.

NSAIDS damage the pouch when they touch it, so taking them by IV or injection is OK.

Just told No NSAIDS, period. They didn't differentiate.

We can only absorb about 30 grams of protein at a time.

This is a myth? How much can we absorb at once? Is there a cap at all?

Most or all RNY patients dump on sugar.

Oh yes. Sugar and Fat will make you dump - or most, at least.

Don’t drink for 30 minutes before you eat or it will somehow wash food out of your pouch (even though there is no food in your pouch yet).

I was told not to drink 30 mins before eating but it was not about washing food out, it was about ensuring your pouch was empty before eating food to ensure you could eat enough food of nutrient value. I think it is also to separate cleanly the idea of eating and drinking.

WLS will cure depression and you won’t need antidepressant meds anymore.

Didn't come up, but not on anti-depressants, so...

Your arthritis is guaranteed to go away after you lose weight.

Nope. Wear on the joints is wear on the joints.

You will never feel hungry again after RNY or at least won’t feel hungry for a very long time.

Won't feel hungry for sometime after surgery. They specifically advised that eventually hunger would return.

Getting enough protein means you won’t lose any hair.

Nope, but told if you don't get enough protein it could cause malnutrition and exacerbate hair loss.

Taking lots of biotin means you won’t lose any hair.

Nope. Even when I asked about biotin they didn't know.

If you exercise a lot, you won’t have much extra skin.

Nope, specifically told it depended on a billion factors including age, gender, elacticity, damage etc.

According to the ASMBS, the 30 grams of protein thing is indeed a myth.  And I've been unable to find anything scientific to contradict their stance on the matter.

However, we do need protein spread out over the course of our day.

Drink carbonated beverages will stretch your pouch. was told it would cause gas pain
Drinking with a straw will stretch your pouch. cause gas
NSAIDS damage the pouch when they touch it, so taking them by IV or injection is OK. cause ulcers
We can only absorb about 30 grams of protein at a time. was told our body only needs that much at a given time. If we eat more then that it is stored as fat. They also mention this in some of the newer medical texts.
Most or all RNY patients dump on sugar. yup
Don’t drink for 30 minutes before you eat or it will somehow wash food out of your pouch (even though there is no food in your pouch yet). yup
WLS will cure depression and you won’t need antidepressant meds anymore. wasn't discussed
Your arthritis is guaranteed to go away after you lose weight. i don't have arthritis but I was told a lot of the pain i do have would go away
You will never feel hungry again after RNY or at least won’t feel hungry for a very long time. yup
Getting enough protein means you won’t lose any hair. I was told with any rapid weight loss this is bound to happen.
Taking lots of biotin means you won’t lose any hair. He told me there was lots of stuff to waist my $ on- but none of them will help.
If you exercise a lot, you won’t have much extra skin. Was told skin varies on your age and how much you have to lose. Was also told they dont typically see a difference in weight loss among those who excercise vs those who dont.

Which of the following myths have you heard from your surgeon, dietician or other health care provider?

Drink carbonated beverages will stretch your pouch.
Nope.  Was told not to do it because I will get it coming up and it wouldn't be pleasant.

Drinking with a straw will stretch your pouch.
Nope.  I was told it would give me gas, but that isn't the case.  I drink from a straw all the time.

NSAIDS damage the pouch when they touch it, so taking them by IV or injection is OK.
Nope.  Was told not to have it in any form.

We can only absorb about 30 grams of protein at a time.
Never heard this one.

Most or all RNY patients dump on sugar.
Yes!  I was told this was a problem.  I've had slight problems with dumping, but not a real problem.  And, it happens with carbs - not only sugary things.

Don’t drink for 30 minutes before you eat or it will somehow wash food out of your pouch (even though there is no food in your pouch yet).
10 mins before eating and they didn't tell me why. - 30 minutes after for the above reason.

WLS will cure depression and you won’t need antidepressant meds anymore.
Nope.

Your arthritis is guaranteed to go away after you lose weight.
Nope.

You will never feel hungry again after RNY or at least won’t feel hungry for a very long time.
Nope.  I do feel hungry, but it did take a while after the surgery to feel it.

Getting enough protein means you won’t lose any hair.
Nope.  I got this from the OH site - didn't help me.  Still lost some.

Taking lots of biotin means you won’t lose any hair.
Nope.

If you exercise a lot, you won’t have much extra skin.
Nope.  I sure would like to find a non surgical way to take care of this.

I think it's time to resurrect a couple of the previous RNY myth threads for the benefit of the many new people...

Which of the following myths have you heard from your surgeon, dietician or other health care provider?

Drink carbonated beverages will stretch your pouch. He said if you have to drink a carbonated beverage to have a diet sprite or 7up. The colas have phosphoric acid and it leaches calcium out of the bones, and seeing as we are already at risk especially if you have the RNY for deficiency's to just avoid drinking them. He also mentioned that some people have issues with gas from the carbonation.

Drinking with a straw will stretch your pouch. The nurse that runs the program mentioned to avoid using them, but I really can't remember why. I drink with a straw.

NSAIDS damage the pouch when they touch it, so taking them by IV or injection is OK.  He said you can't have any. He strongly suggested at the informational meeting, if you needed them for chronic pain, to think about having one of the other surgeries other then the RNY.

We can only absorb about 30 grams of protein at a time. Don't remember hearing that.

Most or all RNY patients dump on sugar.  Said not all patients dump, that was a myth.

Don’t drink for 30 minutes before you eat or it will somehow wash food out of your pouch (even though there is no food in your pouch yet).  The nurse said to drink right up to eating, but to listen to your own body especially when your early out from surgery

WLS will cure depression and you won’t need antidepressant meds anymore.  My surgeon or nurse didn't mention anything to do with this, but hey I was hoping it would.

Your arthritis is guaranteed to go away after you lose weight. he said chronic pain, could be better with weight loss, but not that it would go away.

You will never feel hungry again after RNY or at least won’t feel hungry for a very long time. Can't remember him saying that.

Getting enough protein means you won’t lose any hair. Nope, mostly likely you will lose some hair. Some people lose a lot, some people lose less

Taking lots of biotin means you won’t lose any hair. Heard about biotin on the boards here.

If you exercise a lot, you won’t have much extra skin.  He said, the majority of people will have extra loose skin. How much all depend on age, how long you have been over weight, genetics.
