My surgeon says 5 months out we can try it, but try it at home first because your body is totally different and you will not tolerate it the same. Also of course goes without saying no sweet mixed drinks.

Be careful of cross addictions.  Some people who drank before surgery, have drinking problems after surgery.  I found out I am allergic to alcohol, I break out in drunks.

i started drinking about 2 months out (early i know, my surgeon recommended 3 months but i wanted a drink on my birthday and didn't really have another one til the 3 month mark). it reacts the same way with me, except that i'm now the opposite of a normal person, if i eat within an hour before i drink i get drunk quick, if i don't i don't get drunk.

a lot of people do get drunk very quickly though

I can not tolerate it the way I used to and have to be careful because I can get very intoxicated. However if I eat a meal, it wears off quickly.  Try it at home first with someone you can trust.

I don't drink a lot, but do have wine with dinner on certain occasions and will have a mixed drink once in a while.

For me, the wine seems to take effect more quickly and then wear off more quickly. I generally only have a glass or two at a time, in fact I rarely, now that I think about it, have a second glass. I just don't feel the need. It is a nice accompaniement (sp?) to a nice dinner once in a blue moon.

Would never drive after drinking even one though because I've heard that our blood alcohol levels get all out of whack after this surgery and the last thing I need is a ticket.

Physically though, I've had no problems and I've had wine, mixed drinks and even a couple of strawberry daquiris (not recently, all spread over the last 2+ years of course, lol).

If you are going to try it, you might just want to try your first one and home. You don't want to be out in public if it makes you start dumping, or if you haven't learned how much you can drink without getting drunk. Because believe me, the effects do hit you A LOT faster post-op.

I tried a bloody mary at 6 months out.  I wanted to stay away from the sweet and really high calories alcoholic beverages.

Let's just say my husband called me a "cheap date"!!  After I drank about 1/2 I was pretty lit!!
