Just curious....I am not sure when I will be getting my surgery, hopefully soon, but I am a smoker.  I am gonna try and quit before the surgery, but I am not sure how well that will go, lol.  And please, please please spare me the lectures, k?  I know smoking is bad for you and inhibits your healing and blah blah blah.  Really.  I do.

Just FYI, you may HAVE to quit before you get surgery. Most reputable surgeons won't operate on you if you still smoke and most will blood test you pre-op.

As for smoking after surgery...that's your own personal decision. I personally wouldn't want to go through the surgery, lose all the weight, only to die of metastatic lung cancer...but, that's just me.

I quit back in September as soon as I found out the surgeon won't touch a smoker. I can't believe how much better I feel. There are people who do smoke post op. Keep in mind it can cause ulcers after surgery. I'm sure others will post their thoughts as well :) Good Luck quitting the hard habit!

I smoked for 40 years.  My surgeon would not do the surgery if I was smoking.  I quit about 3 months before the surgery.   It was really hard, but I am glad I did.  Please consider it.  I used Chantix and and online support group.

I have been smoke free for about a year and a half.  this is the longest I have gone without a cigarette since the 4th grade.

You can do it.

Yes,

That is when I started smoking.  Not a pack a day, but when we had the chance.  I think I really became addicted at about 16.  Quitting was rough but well worth it.

I was just surprised at 4th grade.....

I didn't start smoking until about 14-ish and continued for the next 30 years....and yes, quitting is rough, but like you, I think well worth it!!!
And now I am one of those cranky ex-smokers that can't stand the smell of cigarette smoke....

My surgeon will not operate on anyone who has smoked unless they have stopped smoking for 6+ months. Most surgeons I know of are the same. Does your surgeon know this or have any requirements pre op

A suggestion would be to call your surgeons office and ask someone if they know your doctors requirements as far as smoking goes. They should be able to tell you, and if they have a 3 or 6 month or however long requirement you could give it a try now
