Exercise Question

I know there is another site for this, but I see a lot of people talking about working out so I thought I would ask here. I cannot afford (money and time) to go to the gym. I have a elliptical machine and a few hand weights in my home. I do not have a weight bench though. I purchased the book The Body Sculpting Bible for Women as well. The question is, do I need a weight bench? I have NEVER been big on working out and I know that it's not going to change. I will try to get up in the morning and work out 5 days a week and then try to get another work out during the evening. In order to lift weights properly, do I have to have a bench? Can I sit in a chair? Your thoughts please.

You do not need a bench.  All weight exercises can be done standing, seated or on the floor.

you do not need a bench.  And initially - I would not try to get one, but as you get better and want to work more - you may consider buying it.
A lot of people sell used exercise equipment on craigs list or even in paper.  And many time you can bargin with them. I bought my nice bench - lookes like never had been used - from an add for $15.00.  They even helped me load it in my car.

Thank you both. I really do not want to spend a lot of money since I have not embarrassed the exercise bug yet. I'm still really tired but I am going to try to get up and do some of the things in this book. I'm loosing slow so I want to tone as well as try to increase my weight loss. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I would agree that you don't need a bench.

Remember like everything else in this process your attitude will play a large role. If you have an attitude of "l don't like exercise and wont" then you are right you probably never will, but if you embrace it as part of your new lifestyle then you and your body might surprise yourself.

Walking is great exercise, esp. early out and it doesn't cost anything. That will also help you get in shape for lifting when you get ready to do that also.
It's really important to find something you like to do since you will stick to it a whole lot better.

Thank you. I know I need to change my attitude about exercising. Truthfully, I have always been able to not eat but I have not been able to exercise consistently. I try walking but it's so boring. Me and my kids walk through the park but not daily. I will try to use the elliptical 10-15 minutes this morning. I thought that I needed to use weights for my arms and my legs because they are getting jiggly. I will keep walking and try the weights. I will also keep looking for something that I like. Something has to be out there. I used to love to ride my bike when I was a kid. I wonder if I get small enough to do that again will it be fun? You never know.

If I were you, I would not have such a lofty goal to start out with.  Is over 5 times a week something you'll really stick to?  I worry if you miss a workout or two you'll just throw in the towel completely (at least that's what I would have done in my early days).  Why not set your goal to 3-4 times a week and work from there?

OK, I thought I would have to do it daily or I would give up. I guess I can start out that way. Another problem is my AS. I have a form or arthritis so I can't push to fast. Thanks for the feedback.

I'm not trying to discourage you.  I am an exercise nut, but my goal is still 3 times a week (2 hours each workout).  Anything more is gravy.  I'm just too busy to "commit" to any more than that and don't want to set myself up to feeling like a failure if I do less than my goal.
