my surgery was 12 days ago today. i still have yet to reach any kind of full feeling. not even a tightening in my chest or water coming back up or anything like that and it makes me nervous. i can comfortably eat about 2 or 3tbsps of food. and i could still eat more since i don't feel full or get any signs that my stomach has had enough, but i don't pu**** granted i'm mostly drinking liquid but some of the foods i've had refried beans with shredded cheese and a dab of con queso sauce, 1 full string cheese, french onion soup without the bread or the cheese, and vegetable soup. obviously not all those foods at the same time but when i eat seperate small meals those are what i've been eating. is this normal not to get ANY kind of full feeling or sign that you're stomach has had enough. i am scared to do something wrong and have it mess up the healing process of my stomach

The nerves to your stomach have been severed so you won't feel hunger or fullness for many months. Stick to weighing and measuring your food so you don't accidentally eat too much. Your body will start to let you know when you've had enough, some people get the hiccups, my nose starts to run. That is my signal that I am full and stop eating whether or not I have finished the portion that I've measured out.

Oh no! Months?!

I'm six weeks out and have just recently started to feel full. I think that may have to do with the type of food I'm eating - I'm starting to eat chicken and turkey now.

My doctor didn't say anything about measuring out food ... I haven't really been doing that. Do you measure everything?

Amber,

Your stomach should only hold 1/3 cup to 1/2 cup of food right now.  Measure your total food to make sure you are not eating too much.

The more solid food you eat, the better off you are

I am almost a year out....I weigh and measure everything.

I do this for a couple of resaons.  I did not get to be obese by being in tune with true hunger...I responded to things other than hunger to eat.  Also, as others pointed out, the nerves to the stomach are cut....you will not feel anything unitl you are in pain or needing to throw up.

I hiccup.  Sometimes I can eat 2/3 rd cup b4 it happpens and some times 2 bites, but when it happens, I stop eating.  The one time I did not, I ended up nauseated with chills.  Too close to what I think is dumping and I don't want to risk it!

I'm too early in the process to really "feel" full but my feeling has been kinda gassy/hiccupy feeling in my sternum - still on full liquids but tried pudding and had a really full "feeling" after a few teaspoons, even though I know it's not really a sensation but almost an intuition that I need to slow down my liquids or I'm gonna regret it. Not sure if that makes sense but our bodies are all different. My surgeon said this period is "learning your pouch". So what one "feels" as "full" is not the same as another persons'. Make sure your following your rules and don't worry too much about comparisons. You'll learn your body soon enough (and maybe even long for the days where you didn't feel full!).

My guess is that you are doing everything just right!  If you pushed the limit, you would feel uncomfortable.  Since newly post-ops cannot feel hungry/full, we have to measure everything according to our plan.  (I've seen some post-ops who didn't really have a plan...do you?)  My plan tells me what I can eat, at which week, how much I should eat, etc.  It's pretty specific.  I have only felt that uncomfortable feeling once when I ate some soup too quickly.  Otherwise I don't feel "full".  However, I don't feel hungry either.

I didn't feel full the first couple weeks. Now at 5 weeks I do feel full. I get a "full feeling" in my tummy for sure and I feel like I need to burp.  So that is when I stop. I just made a Stouffers chicken/mashed potatoes for lunch and only a little over half the chicken and two small bites of potatoes and I am FULL! I am glad to have this feeling, I never had real feelings of fullness because of my pituitary gland not functioning for many years. So my doctor prescribed Concerta XR(also for my ADD) for me prior to surgery to help with appetitie control and I was finally able to feel full! Now I am on Vivanse and I am not sure if it is doing the same thing or not, but I'll take it!  I still try to "measure" in my head and keep things at 2oz. servings and will continue to follow the plan my doctor has in my booklet.

I think it sounds like you are doing just fine with 2-3 Tbs. of food. If you aren't feeling ravenously hungry.  I would stick to that.

Here's my doctors plan: Each frame adds new foods to the list which is a nice way to follow everything!

4 weeks following surgery: 2 oz. at each meal
5-8 weeks: 2 oz. each meal adding pureed foods
9-15 weeks: 3 oz. per meal Months 4-6 : 4 oz.  a meal
Months 7-9 5 oz. meal
Months 10-12 : 6 oz. a meal
Months 12-18: 7 oz. a meal
Maintenance: 8oz. a  meal
