Hey Vets...do you count CAL from protein shakes
I use Unjury Chocolate Classic and LOVE it...however...it has:
100 CAL
.5g Fat
4g CARB
20g Protein
(in one scoop)
Then of course you add the milk to it which adds another:
80-100 CAL
8g Protein
If I drink 2 of these a day it equals roughly:
400 CAL
56g Protein
My question is...do we count those CAL in our daily CAL total or no? If not then I'm getting in a bit of CAL just in 2 drinks for the day. Just Curious....I thought I had read about this somewhere else, but cant remember :) Have a great rest of our day ~ Sarah

Now that I am almost 2 years out I count the calories but early on I did not. Then I onyl counted the protein grams. One adjustment I made is that I now mix my pp with water instead of milk but that is the only change, oh and now I have one shake per day instead of 2 or more. You are very early out I think what you are doing sounds right and not like to many calories....
Why would you not count all the calories?

My Nut wanted me to stop having shakes after I was 6 weeks out of surgery for this reason.
I did do shakes for much longer than 6 weeks, because I couldn't get my protein in. I found shakes to be very filling and I wouldn't eat much else. I suppose you could have a problem if you drank them frequently in addition to your meals. Also, it is conceivable that someone could get nearly all of their protein from shakes and make poor food choices since they technically met their protein goals.
If you are really concerned, you could log your entire intake and review from there.

When I was counting, I always counted EVERYTHING that went into my mouth. I don't understand why you would NOT count calories from shakes... you count the protein from them...

Rather than counting Cal, I suggest that you count Protein Grams and Carb Grams. They are more important as you follow a post-op food plan. If you want to lose weight, most women should eat between 1000 to 1200cal per day and men should have about 1400-1600 cal. Once you get into it, your realized that the proper proportion of various foods is more important than just the total cal. You want to get in your protein And, yes, you do count the carbs and protein from any milk or anything else you add to your shakes. If you want more flavor in your shakes, I suggest using either the Torani or DaVinciGourmet sugar free and fat free syrups to flavor them. I've been using DaVinci for 10 years and add the various flavors to vanilla protein powders. I don't know the comparitive numbers of carbs to protein grams on Unjury, but I know it is often recommended on many of the forums on OH. I often use one of the various shakes made by Syntrex. I'd say you probably want to get about 20-25 g of protein and less than 5 g of carb per shake. If your single serving has double that amount, simply use half of the portion. Note: sometimes the manufacturers calculate the protein etc for 2 scoops--that's because body builders want more protein. They usually want higher carbs so be careful when you shop for shakes and additives.
I suggest at least looking at www.netrition.com because you can look at the labels for everything they sell. Buy where you want but this allows you to do research while at your computer without having to make up your mind while in a store. I have difficulty standing and bending over. I basically block an isle if I go with my rollator so I can sit down while looking over labels. It's easier for me to read the labels online. If you do decidee to use netrition, note that they charge a single rate for S&H regardless of the size of your order. So, I tend to buy about 6$60-$100 worth at a time.
