How far out for everyone did it take for you to be able to get in your protein WITHOUT a protein shake. I know I have awhile to go but i'm just wondering. I know some have 1 protein shake/drink a day and 2 meals and get in their protein that way. How long did it take for that as well.

I think it's pretty individualized. Some folks start out getting their protein from food ASAP. I'm 2 1/2 years out and still have to get 120grams/day in so on a day when I'm being "good" I'll still drink at least 2 and usually 3 shakes.

Have you talked to your surgeon? They usually have some guidelines and can give you and idea of what you have to look forward to.

Good luck. Protein shakes = no fun.

Oh, and if I haven't already said so, Congrats on your recent surgery and your awesome decision to change your life! You won't regret it!

Thank you!

I see my NUT and surgeon on may 12th for my 1 month follow up so i'm going to ask then. right nwo since 1/4c is my limit per meal it's impossible to get much protein in without my shakes. we are told 60 to 90g of protein per day. i try to keep mine up by the 90's, eventually higher - if i can find a good shake i can stomach

What protein drinks do you use? I really want to start drinking them again but having trouble finding one I can stand. Thanks Julie

Today I'll probably have about 70 g of protein from food

Usually I get between 30 to 100 g of protein from food

I also drink from one to four protein shakes a day, which is 23 g to 92 g of protein

It has been too long for me to remember exactly when, but I know -- based on business trips and vacations I took, etc. -- that I was doing only one protein shake before the 6-month mark (4 months would be my guess because I was SO sick of them my motivation to eat my protein was pretty high!) and that I was using the one protein supplement that I still use just as "extra" protein by 9 months.

edited to add that I have ALWAYS eaten 6-7 times per day post-op... so I NEVER did just 2 meals and a protein shake

my NUT says 3 meals a day and no snacking. however i am gonna discuss that more with her when i see her on may 12th. i kind of don't agree with that since we are eating smaller portions, and already having a metabolism problem i would need to eat more frequent, small meals to keep it going

I'm almost 5 months (can't believe it!) out, and I drink a Adkins Advantage strawberry protein shake every single morning....I drink the premade ones, so their not the most economic choice, but they're the only protein shake I don't find disgusting.

I think I will always drink at least one shake a day...you can never get too much protein.

I think that's good.  Most of them go with the "three meals only" rule in order to keep people from overeating, but if they are planned protein and complex carb snacks, you will probably NOT overeat (and, as you already said, it DOES keep your metabolism more stable throughout the day... and there are LOTS of studies to back that up).
