What Do You Think Of Apple Salad?

My mother made some absolutely delicious apple salad today! It looked so good that I just couldn't resist and boy, it was was as tasty as I thought would be!! If you don't know what it is, it is:
apples- diced into about 1/2 inch to 1 inch cubes
raisins-just little leftover boxes she had
pecans-chopped up into fairly small pieces
mayonaise-about 2-3 tablespoons or to your taste

Mix it all up and it's a great cold summertime treat! I had absolutely No problem with it feeling stuck or even uncomfortable at all. (I guess I'm staying away from chicken for a while) BUT, here's my question....I know that we are supposed to, as new-ops, to always do protein first. I hardly think that a few chopped up nuts hardly makes apple salad a good protein choice. Although fruits and veggies, tp a point, are also good, right?

So what do you all think? Is it a good idea? She made a medium sized batch of it and I'm wanting to eat more tomorrow!!!!

I would eat a small serving with some meat.  Apple salad is one of those things for me taste yucky leftover while tasting yummy the first go around - and I am a huge leftover eater!

To tweak the recipe, instead of mayo, sweeten some plain greek yogurt with your fave sweetener, or mix in some sf jello or pudding mix, ups the protein much more than just nuts.

That would be the perfect answer! To "tweak" it, but my mother made it and I know that "the fam" won't use greek yogurt or anything of the sort. They are very supportive as long as they don't don't have to eat like me!! And well, to be honest and forthright, I won't ever make it because I hate to make anything! It just doesn't taste as good when I make anything, I don't know why, it just doesn't!! So, that's a big reason I was asking for you all to give me your opinion!! I know that's horrible because I always hear and read such great recipes, but I won't ever even try one....

My mom used to make something similar to that, only she called it Waldorf Salad. Sounds yummy whatever you call it. I'm scared to eat apples, because some fruit makes me dump.

Yes, it is fine to have a small amount as a treat or AFTER you have had your protein... but the cardinal rule of post-op eating is PROTEIN FIRST ALWAYS (and, no, the small amount of nuts don't have nearly enough protein to qualify).

I love Waldorf salad.  I use walnuts and golden rasins and lowfat vanilla yogurt.  A drizzle of honey or Agave nectar and it's perfect!  It's a good side for some lean protein...especially with the upcoming bbq season.  I think the fiber and the natural sugar would be a good thing.  For me, the MAYO would have to go.

For me, the worse part of cooking is the prep that goes into it.  That is why I usually buy vegetables that are already cut up, cooked, diced chicken, etc.  Anyway, the point is maybe if your  mom gives you the ingredients you can put together your own portion with the greek yogurt.  I agree with the others, it is fine in moderation, once you have had your protein.

Nuts and dried fruit, ie raisens, aren't on my plan, still at almost 8 months.  If they are on yours, go for it.  Again, protein first and then about 1/4c serving of salad.
