ok ladies, i point blank asked my surgeon if we asorb completely the birth contril pill...he told me YES, from a bypass stand point  you asorb the pill..ok fine...i went to my OBGYN today for the annual pap, and i asked her what she thought...she has no idea if we asorb it or not... she said "if we asorb the pill, my pills are strong enough and should be fine...but if we dont, then i could end up with a opps......i am too old to have an opps..i have 3 grandkids.. haha....she suggested i get marena IUD...not really what i wanted to do....

i am leaving for 3 months on june 1st  so i told her i would decide by the time i get back...hubby is staying here, while  i go to work at my parents business for the busy summer season...

anyhow i know this has been discussed alot, but would like some refreshers.....
thanks for the help

My ob wants me to go on mirena in a few months. I've heard many good things about it so that is the direction I will probably go in.

If you dig through a couple pages into the boards we just talked about this the other day and there was a lot of feedback in that post.

I've been on several different forms of birth control in my life.  I had to stop oral contraceptives because of my weight.  I tried some without hormones and hated them.  The next choice was a Merina IUD.  I've had that ever since.  I just replaced my IUD after five years last summer.  I LOVE it and wish I would have used that to begin with.  I have no period and no cramping.  Initially I had a lot of pain, cramping, and spotting but that is because I've never had any kids. It supposed to be easier for those who have had children.

Good luck on your decision!

We don't absorb anything like www did post op. The pregnancy boards on here has seen many women on bc that have been told they absorb it and became pregnant soon after wls. I was told we should double up on BC because we don't absorb all of the BC pills. It's a good question to ask on the pregnancy board, they are very helpful and a lot have been there with BC issues.

 I LOOOOOOOVE my Mirena IUD.

I've been on it twice. It's 9 years of birth control that I don't really need to worry about. It, eventually, stops my period for the most part. Though sometimes I spot very lightly from it.

Insertion wasn't pleasant- having anything go in or out of your cervix kind of sucks. If you have vicodin take it before hand, or consider asking for it or something if such things are particularly hard on you. I got my IUD before WLS, so I just took motrin and was fine.

Good luck! :)

just a thought, but, if you're saying your a grandma, and you're not wanting an oops, how about getting your tubes tied? Then you don't have to worry. I am 36, remarried with a boy and girl frommy first marriage and had it done in September 2010. What I had was called Essure, it was done under anesthesia in an out patient procedure and then 3 mths later I had a special xray to see if it worked.

Years ago, I had an IUD but the dr I had at the time put it in wrong so it not only hurt me but my hubby as well. I have also been on BCpills, but since I am not a good pill rememberer, I decided on just doing the surgery,

What ever you chose good luck, if you have any ?'s I can try to anwer them.

I had the Marena IUD after i had my son pre WLS. and I HATED IT, and IT HATED ME. got it july and in april my body finally rejected it and it fell out.

my Doc said 2 kinds of BC, my OBGYN said why do that when we can put you on the Nuva Ring?
the meds get absorbed by the cell walls and bypasses your tummy all together. I have been on it for the last 6 months and LOVE IT!!!

My surgeon's plan says use 2 types of BC for the first year to avoid any oops. Right now, being a newbie, just don't feel like sex & terrified of getting pg so WHEN that urge comes back it'll be my Seasonale and condom.... until he gets a vasectomy!!
It seems like my Seasonale has been working. No spotting or cramping since surgery, so I'm thinking it IS working. However, my recommendation is for all to use 2 types just in case... I'd use Mirena if it were covered by my insurance :( Also, direct absorption products like Nuva Ring or the patch may be more effective with increased weight loss. I'd never been a candidate for those as too much body fat keeps them from being absorbed efficiently into the blood stream.

I was told oral birth control and another barrier method for at least 6 months. But then I heard about nuvaring and have been using it since surgery.
