I guess a few of these responders have never lost a job and insurance. I never said it was cheaper than paying for cobra but I don't have 800 extra dollars a month to pay for it. I can however get financed and pay much less than that every month. I hope that helps with your confusion.

To all the rest thank you so much for the info. I knew I was not the only one out there that this has happened to.

I totally understand that, as I've been through 4 job losses of my husband's in 5 years.  I even told him at the start of my 6 month, whatever happens please do not lose your job.  I was devastated.  Had we paid COBRA (which we didn't because the Unemployment got locked up) we would have been in financial ruins right now.  It would have taken about 4 months of payments to get through surgery (Feb - May) which = $3200 +.  The other thing with COBRA is, we had 60 days to decide which took us to the beginning of April.  When you pay it, you have just a few days to catch up and it goes back to the last day of insurance.. in other words on April 1st I would have had $2400 due with I think a 15 day time frame to pay it.  That would have covered Feb, March and April, eventhough I didn't need it in Feb and March.

Do what you need to do for you.  If you can get financing, go for it.  I was considering that myself at the time.

since your husband lost his job, could you get ike a medical assistance card to cover your surgery until he gets back on his feet. i can understand the frustrations of it all. care credit , they pay for surgery and you can make monthly payments ...u also can use it for anything. the vet, your teeth, surgery. (cosmetic)... dont give up hope their has to be a way ... whats scary is how the jobs are leaving and im always afraid i wont be able to pay for labs every time i go to the dr after r.n.y .......idk..
