Before surgery I never had a problem with this but now after surgery it is severe, with me only haveing protein and very little veggies. I am taking 3 ducolax stool softners a day right now to see if it will help me. But other than that I have been eating 2oz of protein and 1 tsp of veggie as the dietitan says i should be doing three times a week. Then 3 protein drinks a day.. Then I run into this problem I used to go everyday Now I only got 1 hard time every 2 or 3 days:( Does anyoen else have this problem. Being 5 weeks out it has been scaring me how hard I have to push. Sorry for all the nasty talk But i am wondering if i am the only one out there. Thanks

I haven't had surgery yet, but my nutritionist said a daily fiber supplement will be essential the first couple of years.  He recommended Benefiber because he said some of the others clump up and can possibly cause a clogged stoma.  He said absolutely no Metamucil.

Also make sure you are getting enough liquids.  Constipation isn't a taboo subject, and it is not fun to deal with, but you can manage it if you work at it.  Good luck!

I was like you very regular before surgery.  Last week I ended up in the ER for 6.5 hours.  I had taken Mom before going along with benefiber and nothing...2 enemas and still having problems.  They sent me home with a bottle of Magnesiumj citrate.  1/2 a bottle and three hours later success!!   I've been good so far but I have incorporated fiber choice into my diet and a few strawberries.  Good luck.

I've had terrible problems with constipation.  It was so bad I gave myself a hernia from straining.
I have been following Vitalady's protocol since then and I have been about 90% better.

I  use Miralax (generic) daily.  My doctor prescribes so I don't have to worry about the cost.
I take magnesium oxide 500 mg twice a day.
I use Fiber Choice and other things like flax seed meal to get in  enough fiber.
I use a probiotic daily.
The only problem is this causes my stool to be very soft but I guess it's better then being too hard.  I go every day now.
Once in a while I will still have a problem with constipation and when I do I take milk of magnesia right away.  I don't want to let it get out of hand.
Also, make sure you are getting your fluids in.

My surgery date was 5/6/11 and I've had this problem too. I've taken a veggie laxative a couple of times and fruit seems to help me also.

Here's what I use: Miralax and/or Smooth Move tea daily, Colace on occasion, Milk of Magnesia on occasion. I go every day b/c I'm terrified of having an impacted colon. NUT said no fiber suppliments - but not sure if I really agree with her. Have seen 3 different NUTs over the past 6 months and the opinions differ widely....

My one (and only) experience with benefiber was NOT GOOD.  Won't do that again.  I'm not sure what the problem was but still ...

Where do you get the Smooth Move tea?  Do you know what's in it?

As for the OP, I usually go every day or every other day on my own.  I do get 120oz or more of water and I walk on the treadmill 60 minutes per day.  Things tend to happen after walking.  If it's been more than a couple days, I'll take Milk of Mag.

I've bought the Organic Smooth Move at Whole Foods and Safeway (local grocery store). It has senna leaf, senna extract, licorice root, bitter fennel, sweet orange peel, cinamon bark, coriander, ginger & orange peel oil. Interesting flavor but it's one less pill to chew and adds to my liquid intake.... Senna is the part that makes you go!

Thanks!  I'll look for it.  I prefer a more "herbal" approach.

I had this same problem and the ONLY thing that helped me was WATER, WATER, WATER..and did I mention WATER!  Drink up!  I hope you feel better soon.
