I posted this in the state forum but thought I'd have a better response here.

Can you show up at any support group or just the one for your doctor/hospital? I would go to more support groups but my doctor/hospital is farther away than I want to travel sometimes. There is one closer but it's at a different hospital/program.

I would go to a local support group..I recommend it highly...it doesn't matter what group you are going to but that you go for at least a year or two..There are plenty of electronic support venues like this one, several on facebook..but having people local is just a great idea for the first couple of years..

Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!

Most doctor's groups welcome everyone, but if you are nervous, call ahead to make sure.

Thanks! I'll call and check to be sure. I've only been to one so far and it was very informative and good mix of different experiences.

Most support groups welcome anyone there. But, I'd make a phone call to be sure. Some surgeons have "extra fees" which cover support groups, counseling, etc. and you may need to be a patient of that surgeon to attend.  The support groups I attend welcome anyone, but others may have different rules. Yes, I'd highly recommend attending a support group every month, if not more.  Formats at support groups may vary some, and you may have to attend more than multiple groups to find one you like--even if you have to drive some distance.  I'd encourage you to go to your local group - my surgeon/hospital is 1.5 hrs away but my local support group is 15min away. The proximity helps me attend weekly! There's also a teleconference support group that Joyce (Rejoyce) is setting up starting next week and last time I checked there were still 2 spots open. She posted a thread earlier today about it.

Sometimes I've had to go to other groups to meet requirements for my program...everyone was welcoming, and nobody seemed to mind where I was from. Go to one close to home, and enjoy the group. If a plan requirement like mine, have the group leader write a note with your attendance, most are accomodating.
