I am almost 10 months out, and I still dump on sugar.  which is good to me.. Other than that I still try to make good choices, I still don't eat pizza or rice or pasta, I just don't have a taste for them anymore. I think it is alright to eat stuff in moderation once in a while, just not daily. take care

I think the point is we aren't supposed to get sick when we eat things.  This isn't surgically induced bulimia.  Other then sugar, which 30% of patients can't tolerate,  it seems most people can eat most foods.  However, that doesn't mean you should.
The point of the surgery is to assist you in making good choices, to eat the way you are supposed to with some help.  If your goal is to have a normal weight  then you will always have to make good choices, at least most of the time.
Because the surgery is supposed to help you eat less, at least in the beginning, and because of the malabsorption factor, most people will lose weight in the beginning unless you are trying very hard not to.
But eventually you are able to eat more and the malaborption comes to an end and all you are left with is your ability to make good choices.  Look at it this way.  When I was little I used to pray every night to wake up thin.  Then I realized that even if I did wake  up thin I would soon be fat again if I continued to eat the same way.  The surgery helps you wake up thin, although not as fast, but if you don't change the way you eat you will get fat again.
