Reminder about calcium

It is recommended for the 1st 3 weeks because it is easier to digest on a new gastrointestinal track that is still healing. Once you are healed and without major issues then you switch to the other.

I don't think it's a matter of it being easier to digest, it's that we don't digest it.  Certainly you can take it if you want.  I don't see the point since you'll only absorb 4% of it (or have to take about a whole bottle every day) but of course it's up to you.

The ASMBS does not recommend taking it for the first three weeks, though, and I personally would stick with their advice.

It is still useless if you can "digest" it but not absorb it...  might as well not bother taking any at all for 3 weeks.

I prefer to follow my surgeon's guidelines. He is one of the top rated in the country and I am secure in the knowledge that he is providing me with high quality care.

i am honestly NOT trying to be confrontational, but I see a lot of people here say that their surgeon is "one of the top surgeons in the country", so this time I just HAVE to ask... where do you see rankings of bariatric surgeons?  I have searched and never found anything.

I want to know... how can all these different surgeons be the "top" surgeon?  Shouldn't there just be one top surgeon, by definition?

By definition, yes. "One of the top surgeons could be "one of the top 10 surgeons" nationwide, or "one of the top 100", or even "one of the top 1000", but if the ASMBS doesn't rank them I just want to know who does.  I'm actually more curious about what criteria would be used to rank a doctor than anything.

The surgeon I just got my second opinion from (regarding my intermittent belly pain) has been doing these surgeries much longer than most surgeons and is probably the top surgeon in our area in terms of experience and numbers of surgeries... and his patients rarely have anything negative to say about him (except that he isn't especially personable)... but I even searched for rankings of doctors and never found anything nationwide... just "rankings" of doctors who subscribe to an ad service.

Luckily, three weeks of useless calcium won't kill you. Soon, you'll be following the advice of the EXPERTS from ASMBS.

Kelly,

Thanks again for showing us what we need and reminding us of the serving size.
Just to clarify, taking our multi at the same time as iron is okay? I use Celebrate brand; it does
not cause chemical/allergic burns on my tongue or in my mouth- it has vitamin C in with the iron???

As far as others and following your doctor's recommendation vs. ASMBS- They are practicing medicine and you may just be their guinea pig.

I greatly appreciate your work Kelly and I know you do this because you care. You proviide this so that we can continue our journey to health, become educated and use this tool to its max!

If you use a multi with no calcium in it, you can take it with your iron if you want.

I don't remember how much vitamin C is in the Celebrate iron.  You may need to add more.  The ideal ratio is about 200 mg C for every 30 mg iron and many iron supplements contain some vitamin C but not enough.

Thanks for your kind words.
