Ring placed around esophagus???
I ran into an old friend yesterday that had gastric bypass surgery a few years ago. I was asking her all kinds of questions since I''m scheduled for surgery July 11th. She asked me if I was having a ring placed around my esophagus too. I have never heard of this, has anyone else? She said it will not allow large quantities of food to go down and also limits the size of the ffod you eat.
That sounds more like lap-band. Hm......puzzled.

She was probably talking about a silastic ring. Basically it is just like a regular RNY, but they put a silastic ring around the pouch just above the anastomosis. This gives you addition restriction and is thought to keep the stoma from stretching. It's only done for patients that are at least 200 pounds overweight. RNY alone will not allow large quanities of food to go down and limits the size of what you eat. I can't imagine feeling more restriction than I do now. From what I've read not many surgeon's do this for whatever reason. Does she have the same surgeon you do? If so you can ask him about it.
Yeah, that ring is around the stoma, not the esophagus. I've never heard of one around the esophagus. She might just be confused about her surgery, though.
