cream of wheat

Does anyone know if cream of wheat is allowed on the full liquid pre-op diet? Also, how bad is it to not strain cream soups at the pre-op stage? I have had some cream of mushroom soup and cream of broccoli soup (not in the same day) and did not strain them... I did chew the tiny pieces of mushrooms and broccoli really well before swallowing. I am just so hungry and the soup tasted so good.

Some hospital dietary departments consider cream of wheat part of a full liquid diet.   I am an RN on an OB floor...full liquid in our facility includes cream of wheat and oatmeal as well as creamy soups, milk, shakes, puddings, ice cream and all clear liquids.  Not really all liquid...really more mushies.

Having said that....you should probably clarify with your doctor to make sure you are really on the same page with what full liquid means to him/her.

How odd.  I was told full liquid meant only what would go easily and quickly through a strainer... which would exclude cream of wheat and oatmeal.  Why would something as solid as oatmeal be considered part of a full liquid diet?  Why not, then, applesauce, cottage cheese, etc... all the "soft" diet foods?!?  Just trying to understand the point of a "full liquid" diet that includes cream of heat and oatmeal...

Not really sure Lora, I agree it make little sense.

I think a good deal of the deitary classifications are from "old school" ideas on nutrtion and not a good deal of sense or science behind them.

For our OB population, most of the docs allow the new c-section ladies eat anything they want after surgury because the difference between a full liquid diet and a general diet, as far a digestion goes,  is really just the need to chew!

These were all part of my full liquid plan, as well, as was Oat Bran (thinned out with milk), and plain yogurt.

Cream of wheat was allowed on my full liquid diet along with strained cream soups made with skim milk, protien shakes, sugar free pudding and all clear liquids.

Protein shakes blended with ice and mil****il it is like a shake will help you feel full.  I really like the BSN lean dessert protein drinks in whipped cream or chocolate pudding...very thick and creamy and seems very filling.

My full liquid diet did not include cream of wheat and everything had to pass through a strainer quickly without being pushed...but that was post op.

My full liquid diet includes cream of wheat and oatmeal as long as it is thinned out. Allowed but not the best choice for protein during a time when eatting is less and protein is harder to get in.

It also allows SF pudding and LF mashed up cottage cheese that is chewed well.
