18 Pounds under my BMI

I had my last appointment with the Bariatric Doc today. I have been trying to get used to the 2 week liquid/protien diet and have lost 18 pounds.  PROBLEM! I am now 18 pounds under the BMI to get approved for surgery. I see the surgeon on the 5th to schedule and I need to weigh 18 pounds more to get approved. WTH....I can't eat that much in 1 week and really don't want too either. I am starting to feel better than I have in a long time. Any suggestion?

You should double check with your surgeon, but I have never heard of a surgeon submitting anything except your STARTING weight for the insurance approval.

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.

My starting weight was 272 and I weighed 255 today. Bariatric Doc said I need to be at 272 when I see the surgeon next week.

Thanks, that is a good idea. My daughter said ankle weights and I also heard drink a gallon of water. I will be so broken if I don't get approved because of this. I have worked so hard already....

It is suppose to go by your first Dr visit weight, not your 2 week liquid diet weight !!! Your suppose to lose weight on the liquid so I would not fret my friend =) I was under my BMI when I went into surgery !!  Good luck !!

That almost happened to me so I lied by an inch and told them I was 5'8. It's like you are supposed to lose the pre-op weight and then don't qualify, sooooooo messed up

My surgery center went by my first weigh-in. I've lost 30+ lbs since and my surgery is next week! The hospital better not tell me anything different because I was told to lose as much weight as possible by surgery to make things go smoother. Talk to your doctor and tell them you were losing pre-surgery weight. How can they argue? They want your money!  $$$$$$$

Tell them you are losing weight pre surgery to shrink your liver so the surgery would be safer. I think you'll be ok.

I had the same problem.  My surgeon's office made it very clear that it would be the weight that I was at my LAST visit before surgery that would be submitted to my insurance company.  With my pre-op diet, my BMI went down to 40.2.  I had to make sure I ate enough calories to not lose anymore weight in the last 2 weeks before my last visit.  When I questioned the office about it, they said every insurance company has their own requirements.  Mine which is MVP does not want to see your starting weight.  They want to see your final weight, and that is what is submitted for approval.
