interesting(?) info on risks of hernias based on surgery type

I have been doing some research on hernias after RNY (since the surgeon suspects an internal hernia condition being the cause of my intermittent belly pain).  I found some interesting information.  Well, interesting to me, anyway.

It is not surprising that the incidence of incisional hernias is much higher in people who have open RNY (about 20%) than those who have lap RNY (less than 1%).  HOWEVER... internal hernias and small bowel obstructions occur almost twice as frequently in those with lap RNY (roughly 2-10%, depending on the study) than in those with open procedure. The interesting part is that the reason for the smaller incidence in open procedures is the formation of scar tissue (which, somewhat ironically, helps hold the intestine in place)!

Internal hernias also usually present within 3 years of the RNY.

(My pain started a few months before my 3rd anniversary, but I had open RNY not lap and have scar tissue (presumably) from 2 additional open surgeries since then... so maybe my pain is NOT from an internal hernia...)

Anyway, I thought others might be interested in the info.

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.
