OT: First job interview in almost 15+ years...nervous!

Hello and happy July 4th weekend to everyone! I am excited to be re-entering the work force after an almost 10 year hiatus, but am not feeling overly confident since it has been so long. Well, I just got a call back about a job and I have an interview, complete with typing test, next Friday. I am soooo nervous. I pray that they don't stand over me while I type--that makes me a nervous wreck. It is a medical transcription position, so it is pretty critical that I do well on the typing test. It is just so weird to be heading back into the interview process after such a long absence.

Have any of you had a long break from working? How did you do when you returned? Were you nervous?

Anyway, mostly just wanted to say wish me luck!!

Denise

I've not had a long hiatus but had a lot of interviews and done even more.  Preparation is key.

Know your resume backwards and forward.  Have examples ready for each line; one is good, three are better.  Highlight your accomplishments over your tasks; that is, how did you add value for your employers.  Look up typical interview questions for your field and practice the answers.

I doubt you'll have someone over your shoulder as you type.  Few have that kind of time to waste.  Practice to get comfy again and remember accuracy over speed is usually preferred.

Go in looking polished and profesional.  Obvious?  Not to alot of folks.  Last know something about the company and if possible your interviewer's background.  Best of luck.

Hello my friend!! All great advice. It is funny, but you are right--some folks just do not realize the importance of a good first impression. You can only imagine some of the folks I had to interview back in the day. Resumes that looked like a 5 year old typed them, hats on, jeans, tank tops...you name it.

Figured OH is as good a place as any to practice my typing!! ;)

Have a fantastic holiday weekend!!

Thanks! Confidence...hmmm...what is that saying, fake it until you make it? I'll put on a brave face and hope for the best!

Have a good weekend!

Good luck to you!

I haven't worked in 2 years. I have been a cosmetologist for 20 years. I will be moving to another state this weekend and reciprocity is not an option (long story) so when I reenter the work force anything I get will be something foreign to me. I'm very nervous too.

I guess on the bright side is that I would be way more nervous if I were still 300+ pounds (and a lot more uncomfortable too!), so at least that part of the nervousness is gone.

I guess we will be nervous until we get our foot in the door then we'll be fine...I hope!

Good luck to you too!!!

Hi Denise!

So glad to see you posting. Hope things are going well for you.

You'll do great at the interview, I'm sure. I had a boss who once told me that 99% of getting the job was in a person's ability to build a rapport with the interviewer(s), as well as having the necessary skills for the position. I've always remembered that and it has helped me tremendously. I have only been on one interview where I was not offered the job.

With your personality, I'm betting you'll be just fine=)

Best of luck to you!
It was funny to read your post b/c I am going through the exact same thing!
After my son was born, I resigned from my job when my maternity leave was up. I have been out of work for 8 years and I'm reentering the workforce as well.
I'm freaking out about it also!  I'm even having nighmares about it every night!  Not a good time to get back into working in the public schools if you are from my state.
Anyway...
You can find interview questions and answers on line if you google it.
I've been checking those out lately.
Keep us posted!  Would love to hear how it goes!
Take care!
