Signs/Symptoms of Vitamin deficencies?

 What are the signs?

I have a really sore knee, right at the joint.  I did a 5 mile run/walk on the 4th of July but it didn't bother me then, it just keeps getting worse and it hurts t the top, it is starting to swell a bit and when I bend it I want to scream.

Can it be gout from lack of potassium?  What are the signs of that?  Someone mentioned joint pain due to lack of vitamins.

Any feedback would be awesome!  I am having a day!  I tell you...car broke down, pouch is acting up for the first time ever and can hardly eat a thing and now this knee!

I am definitely no expert on deficiencies, but because I did some reasearch on low Vitamin D levels (mine was in single digits after my RNY!), I know that a D deficiency can result in joint pain.  I would think, however, that ANY vitamin or mineral deficiecny would manifest in more than just ONE joint.  I think it is more likely, especially since you are having swelling, that you either injured it during the run/walk or may even have aggravated arthritis you did not even know you had (a common occurrence according to my orthopedic surgeon).

I was hoping you would answer my post.  Thank you so much.  Yeah, with only one joint hurting I think it is pretty odd to be gout or vit problem.  I many need to see the doctor in a week if it does not heal on it's own.

Lora, thanks I always love to read your replies to anyones questions, not just my own.  I love the advice you gave to the person who was 15 months out on the Do and Don't, I am going to follow them too!  I wrote them down in my journal of rules.

Every time I think I drinking with a meal I always think of you!

So sorry you're having a bad day AND the bad knee!!!  I went to the hematologist today for low ferritin level and slowly decreasing B12 level.  I am going to be getting IV iron infusions weekly for the ferritin, and he gave me a B12 shot.  I also increased my suglingual B12 to two a day.

As far as symptoms, I've been having extreme tiredness and lack of energy, and I'm pale as a ghost from my low ferritin.  I also have low VIt D level and will be starting Vit D supplements.  I've read that low Vit D can cause aches and pains.

I'm sorry I don't know about the gout.  I do know that low potassium can cause leg cramps.

I hope you feel better soon!

Thanks for the sympathy, I wlll take all I can get today!  I may need to up my Vit D too, I don't think I take enough.  I have not had my vit levels checked yet, but I will be getting them done soon.  I hope I come out of the good end because I don't think I can stand to take MORE vits!!

Lisa, it's posible that you have injured your knee. Last summer, I tore the meniscus in one knee and the symptoms were much as you describe. At that time I was also diagnosed with joint degeneration in both knees, which was probably the result of years of obesity. Until the injury, though, I had no symptoms.

I had an arthroscopic procedure and am able to do any form of exercise I wish now - but because of the "delicate" knee joints, I don't run.
