What does everyone recommend for BMs?

I use Benefiber powder every day. My surgeon says I still may not be emptying my bowels completely and recommended I use Milk of Mag for a few days to see if that helps my back pain. I tried drinking it this morning but its GROSS!

What does everyone else use to lessen constipation? I don't think I can stomach the Milk of Mag. :(

I take a total of 6 stool softners a day (one with each batch of vitamins) and every morning I take a dose of miralax.  Seems to keep things as they should be  :)

I reccommend miralax and at least 1 stool softener/day.  more if needed.  I struggled with constipation for a while and I found that pumpkin in my diet everyday helped immensly.  I made the maple pumpkin custard on bariatriceating.com and made protein shakes that had pumpkin in it.  Worked wonders!!!

This topis was discussed by my surgeon at a recent support group meeting. He stated "each post op has to find a recipe for themselves".  This means that one person's solution may not be for you. Many rely on Mirilax, but I found it did virtually nothing for me.  Many use stool softeners, and I take 4-5 of these daily.  Eating prunes, a high fiber diet, increased water intake, drinking warm fluids (such as warm prune juice", etc. may be your particular answer.  It may take a combination of two or more of these suggestions to resolve this issue for you. I've seen some recommendations for adding fish oil as a supplement - I know it helps non-WLS individuals stay regular. Not sure if we can absorb the capsules, though. I have seen a product called Coromega that is omega-3 fish oil in non-capsule form.

It tastes terrible, but Milk of Magnesia is the only thing that works for me.

I tried stool softeners, Miralax, Benefiber etc...and the only thing that helped was Milk of Mag every couple of days but I didn't want to rely on that all of the time (plus, it made things TOO loose). Now I drink several ounces of prune juice every day and I go everyday. I like that routine because it's more natural and that makes me more comfortable personally...that's what works for me.

Glad to hear prune juice might be an option - I prefer to keep a bit more natural, too!
