Calories?
I did not count calories early out. Now I kinda do. I'm not real rigid about it but I know about how many calories I eat in a typical day and I try not to go way over or way under that number.
Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.
I have not counted calories since surgery 4 years ago. I count protein and try to keep "white carbs" to a minimum. I do occasionally go out and track my food for two or three days to be sure I am not eating too much, though (my RMR is about 1400 and I don't get much exrcise because of knee issues).
Otehr poeple, thgough, DO need to monitor calories in order to keep themselves on track. It's about what works for YOU.

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.
I didn't the first few months. I had a eating plan that I followed. Protein, fluid & supplements were most important.
I ate protein first, then veggies, fruit or whole grain. I still do that.
At 28 months post RNY, I aim for 1200 calories, 100 oz fluid 100-130 gm protein a day, 80 gm or less of quality carbs.
For me it isn't about calories, it is about nutriton and health. As a morbidly obese person (now at goal weight) I know how to stay within a calorie limit and eat unhealthy all day long. Now I choose "clean" foods rich in protein, nutrients, enzymes. I don't play the games anymore.
Keeping a food journal is helpful to KNOW you are meeting protein, fluid and carb requirements.
Best wishes.
