My question is how do you know that your lactose intolerant? I have noticed in the last month or so my belly hurts when I drink milk or eat ice cream. Is there more to it than just a mild tummy ache for a short period of time? I eat cotteage cheese and other cheeses and don't have a problem. If your are lactose intolerant what do you stay away from or do to prevent it, just not eat dairy??? Are there any medicines you can take??Any info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If your stomach hurts when you drink milk or eat ice cream, it's a good bet that
you're lactose intolerant. Symptoms vary- gas, diarrhea, stomach ache etc.
You would want to avoid lactose in dairy products. If cheese and cottage cheese
don't bother you, eat them and do something else for milk. I use both light soy
milk and lactaid milk (lactose removed), but can eat cheese in moderation.

You can take lactase enzymes (Lactaid) tablets with dairy foods that upset your stomach. I find that higher fat content dairy products have bothered me more than dairy products with lower fat or  bacteria (cheeses, yogurt, skim milk, etc). Whey isolate proteins will not bother as they don't have lactose.

Since my surgery, I can't drink milk because it hurts my tummy. I can have milk in coffee or eat yogurt and cheese no problem.
