curing the sweet tooth -possible?
Naturally, in the end I regained what I lost and was back at square one. I have seen people after wls, eat a teaspoon of cake or a cup of sugar free icecream but I don't think that path is for me.
For long term success, I think the best way for me is to try and avoid sweet tasting foods as much as possible. Go cold turkey if you will, or at the very least just eat fruit.
Has anyone ever been able to conquer the demon sweet tooth? I'm not talking about managing it with healthy substitures but I'm talking about just not eating alternative sweets either.
I know it will be tough, but I'm hoping the longer I can go without it, the more my taste buds will change. About 25 years ago I went on a diet and cut sugar out my coffee. After I stopped diet (a month or so) I put sugar back in the coffee and it tasted awful and to this day, I don't put sugar in my coffee.
I'm hoping to do the coffee thing but on a grand scale. Anyone else been successfull on a long term basis with this?
I "think" I can change my sweet tooth because of my experience with sugar in coffee. The same thing happened when I stopped drinking diet coke for a while. Fingers crossed because I may be wrong but I don't think moderation works for me.
I tried eating sweet foods in moderation so many times before RNY and always landed up caving in. For me I came to the realization that I had to go cold turkey. Since I have not had sweets for a year and a half, I feel I am much more in control. My emphasis is on eating well and fueling my body with only nutritious foods. I choose RNY because it can cause 30-40% of RNY’ers to dump on sugar. I do not want to find out if I dum*****t so this is a great motivator to keep me away from sugar. I know from experience that I can tolerate at least 20 grams of sugar in a meal from nutritious food sources. *Feel free to look at my profile page to see my menu plan.
I have a sweet tooth as well, and early out I couldn't stand the thoughts of sugar. However, now my taste buds are back and I have to say I LOVE sugar! I have chosen to eat sweets in moderation, however I do sometimes have reactions, like rapid heart rate and pain in my stomach. Sweets also make me want to just go to bed, I get so tired from them. Therefore, I determine if it's worth taking the chance on feeling sick depending on the surroundings of where I am. If I'm at home having birthday cake, I'll have it; if I'm in public and not really able to go lay down if I do get sick, I'll choose not to have it. I too have protein bars and shakes to help with that need for sweets. I haven't chosen to have the alternatives such as the WW deserts because I try not to have them that often. I've discovered recently that if I make a protein shake with sugar free Hershey's syrup and stick it in the freezer for about 20-30 minutes, then re-spin it, it has the consistency and tastes just like a chocolate milk shake.....yum, yum! I find those who say they have no desire for sweets is because they don't allow themselves to ever have them. That's fine if you can live that way, and maybe you have to live that way because you can't limit yourself.....each person is different and needs to figure out what works best for them. In my case, it's definitely a plus that they do make me ill if I eat too much.
You can eat fruits, but make wise choices. Some fruits, (like mangos, grapes, pineapple) are high in sugars. For myself, and many others in my post op groups, I liked using SF pudding with added unflavored whey isolate protein. I'd use 8 oz of FF milk poured into a container that had a cover. I'd then add 8 T of the unflavored protein and lightely stir the mix to dissolve the protein. Add the contents of the flavor of SF pudding you prefer. Cover and shake container for about 2 minutes. Refrigerate for a couple of hours. You get 4 two oz servings with 20g protein each. DAVE

Trying to grow some in my garden. (It is very popular in Scotland, but not so much here) I will add some stevia to it if I cook some. It tasted fine that way before.
I do think eating it awakens the sweet demons and the carb cravings though.
I've added stevia to oatmeal and other foods before. I've also used frozen strawberries or a frozen berry "melody" to make my own shakes, adding the unflavored whey isolate protein. You can add blended berries and add that to SF pudding too, but some fructose sugars will be in the pudding. DAVE
