I'm Hoooome sweet Home!
Well, I had my RNY surgery at around 730 Tuesday morning, was in my room by about 10-1015 and up walking at 1. I have done great!
My surgeon's nurse totally was true to her word about making sure my anxiety was taken care of. It wasn't bad anyway until they started to roll me away on the bed, and then it was just because of laying flat. The anesthesia assistant picked on me the whole way "Anxiety? you don't look anxious to me" I assured him that when they started to strap me down I would help with the renovations of the hospital by taking out a wall. All I know is the hallway was fuzzy then. lol
We got to the OR and I moved over to the OR table. Dr. Friedman's nurse was there too - she stayed to watch the whole surgery! She was laughing at me later - said I was talking to them and then just feel asleep, and I hadn't even been given the "good stuff" yet!!
In recovery my first words were that I had to pee! They assured me I had a catheter in and I insisted I had to pee.....then I wanted to know how long before I could have one of the sponges to wet my mouth .... the nurse told me to push my button and I went back to sleep. When I woke up enough to be coherent in my hospital room, my first words were "When can I walk?"
So we got up and at'em. All the nurses were cheering me on. By the end of my stay (today) they were calling me "The Olympian". When the lab guy woke me at 2am for a blood draw, I got up with my sister and walked as soon as he left.
The 2 problems I had:
The first night after the surgery I was using my spiro-meter and inhaling my 10x. The respiratory therapist told me to cough a couple of times after using it. That worked well for the most part, until late Tuesday night when it triggered one of those hard, deep coughing fits that are so intense you gag.... my mercy that hurt! I had only used my pain pump about 3 times prior to that, but I used it liberally the rest of the night!
Then last night my drain tube started hurting me. The tube isn't all soft and pliable, the tip is rigid and my body got tired of it being there. Everytime I would inhale it caused intense pain. When I didn't walk on my own, the nurse called and got permission to give me a double dose of pain meds (pain pump was gone). I slept off and on all last night with pain meds. This morning Dr. Friedman assured me teh pain was from the drain and in about 10 minutes my nurse came in to pull it.... better, instantly!! I was up walking and visiting etc and felt great!!!
Now I am home and a little nervous. Dr. Friedman sends home a lot of information but it was easier being in the hospital. I"m gonna take my great big bottle of water and rest for a while, then start setting alarms on my phone for when to eat, take vitamins,e tc.
Let the journey begin!

Glad to hear you are doing well except for a couple of issues in the hospital. I know I will be so happy to be home, but nervous too as I would like the comfort of knowing doctors and nurses are there to help you when you are in the hospital.

They were really phenomenal. The anesthesia team to the floor nurses / techs. Even one of the housekeeping staff was cheering me on "You went even further this time!"
The night time hospital supervisor knew me LOL .... I'd pass by her office and she'd ask how I was feeling, tell me I was doing great and didn't even look like I had surgery.
I am feeling kind of run down now. Having some Unjury chicken soup for my meal and then I'll work on my big bottle of water again. So far so good. I was even able to lie on my side in bed!

My surgeon and his nurse, as well as the floor nurses all said that the workouts before surgery made a big difference for me. I was walking at a faster pace, further distances than 2 other people who had surgery the same day. I didn't use my pain meds until the coughing fit / drain issue. I am still feeling great today, in fact I am having to remind myself to slow down and take it easy still.
Try going in to the gym with a plan... just wandering in not knowing what I was going to do really left me bored and kind of unmotivated. Having a list (made by a trainer) gave me goals to work towards and I have my new addiction!
