Sorry to correct you the stoma is NOT the pouch.  The pouch is the small part of the stomach that was maintained from your original stomach to do the RNY; the stoma is the connection between the pouch and the intestines.

Well, I only know what several doctors and nurses have told me. Some even drew pictures.

Nope.  The pouch is called the pouch.  The stoma is the opening between the pouch and the small intestine.  The  pouch is part of your stomach, but the part of your stomach that is not the pouch is usually referred to as teh remnant stomach.

No, you won't stretch your pouch by eating 6 small meals a day.  The important
thing is to follow your doc's eating recommendation.  I was also told to
eat 6 times a day and I do or I get too hungry.  Some surgeons say only
3 meals a day.  My NUT discussed this at length with me.  She said some
people push the 6 meals thing to include lots of snacking and carbs which
can stall weight loss and ultimately lead to weight gain.   The 6
meals still need to fall within the carb and calorie guidelines for the whole
day.  Whether you're eating 800 calories in 3 meals a day or 800 calories in
6 meals a day...is still 800 calories.

Eating six times a day does NOT stretch the pouch.  The only way to stretch your pouch is to eat way too much over and over again.  It's very hard to stretch the pouch, though.  It is made from the least stretchy part of your stomach.

I eat six times a day, and that does not mean there is always food in my pouch.  Um, I do sleep about eight hours most nights and I'm not waking up during the night to eat.  And anyway, how would a couple ounces of food in my pouch, even if that must was in there all the time, stretch my pouch?

Whoever told you that does not know what she's talking about.  Maybe her doctor told her that, but if so, he lied to her.

I am the person who posted that. I actually saw my Dr. today and asked both him and the nutritionist why some people are being told to eat 6x a day and other 3x a day. They told me to stick to 3 meals a day and possibly a late night snack. The importance of 3 meals a day is to avoid people from developing habits of grazing which stretch the bottom portion or the opening between your pouch and your intestine. He is #1 in the state of Florida and #2 in the county....I trust him. What happens when your 2-3 ounces turns into 6-8 ounces 6x a day? It's great if you can control it, but I ended up here because I needed to develop new and better habits. My nutritonist said our bodies are designed to eat 3x a day with 2-4 hours for digestion. I only offered this as MY experience with MY surgeon If you don't want other people's opinions why bother posting it? Just follow what your doctor tells you.

How does grazing stretch the stoma?  That makes no sense to me.

Now, I can see how grazing would lead to taking in too many calories during the day, which would cause you to regain weight.  But since grazing usually means eating little bits of food all day long, I don't see how little bits of food would stretch the stoma.

As far as what happens when your 2 - 3 ounces turns into 6 - 8 ounces 6 times a day... well, I do eat about 8 ounces six times a day.  What happens to me is that I feel satisfied, my blood sugar stays stable, I get enough protein and calories, and I maintain my weight where I want it to be.  Other people may have different results, but it works very well for me.

I ended up here because I needed to develop new and better habits, too.  Eating one cup of healthy food six times a day is a new habit for me.  I did not get to be 270 pounds eating only one cup of healthy food six times a day.

Certainly you should do what works for you.  I don't think there is one plan that fits everyone.  We are all individuals.

The reason I posted was because what you said about eating six times a day stretching the pouch did not make sense to me.  So I posted a question about it because I wanted to understand.  The explaination you've given here still doesn't make sense, though.

I'm with Kelly... the idea of gazing stretching the stoma makes no sense.  I suspect that your surgeon is telling you what he is because he is trying to "scare" you away from eating too often so that you do not end up eating too much down the road.  The problem is that when surgeons use this kind of tactic (like with the nonsense about carbonation stretching the pouch), their patients then pass it along as fact and confuse other people.

If controlling how much you eat is likely to be a problem for you then you ARE better off eating only 3 times per day, but I would like to see medical EVIDENCE backing up your nutritionist's assertion that the human body was "designed" to eat 3 times per day.  Do you really think that early man ate three meals at specified times each day?!?

Since my stomach gets empty and I feel hungry and then begin feeling a bit ill if I don't eat, I believe my body was designed to eat more than three times a day.  Why would my body feel hungry if I wasn't meant to eat?

Of course, now that we've had RNY, our bodies aren't exactly as they were designed.  If doctors were trying to design bodies that should only eat three times a day, it seems like they would be giving us bigger pouches and/or doing surgery that left us with a pyloric valve.
