Freaking Out About My Blood Sugar
I had posted on a different board the other day about my blood sugar. I had been having dizzy spells so I decided to check my blood sugar and it was over 250. That freaked me out. I thought it might have been a problem with the strips because they were close to expiration or maybe the meter so I got a new meter and checked again and it was pretty normal, right around 100. I realized that I had just had my protein shake before I had checked it the first time so yesterday I checked it about an hour after I drank my shake and it was 179. After about an hour it goes back to about 100.
Today I drank my shake and checked my blood sugar again after about 30 minutes and it was 311! WTF??? Do I call my doctor? Stay away from my protein shake?
I did the stats on it and it is 19 grams of carbs and 3 grams of sugar? Is that too many carbs? The strange thing is I feel ok after I drink it. I only checked it before because I had been having dizzy spells.
I am scared to death of reactive hypoglycemia. Isn't that when your blood sugar spikes and then drops fast? So far it doesn't seem to be dropping fast or too low. It usually goes to about 100 after about an hour. Do I need to be checking more often? Before meals and after?
Should I be concerned? I will call my doctor on Monday but do I need to call before that?

I was having similiar issues a while back and went to my PCP who told me not to check my blood sugar till 2 hrs after I ate. I thought I was getting RH too because when my blood sugar would drop back down to normal I would feel funny but it never went too low. My PCP told me she didn't know what to do about it other than to check my hemoglobin A1C to make sure I wasn't running high all the time and told me my choices where to wait it out and see if it goes away as my weight stabalizes or to see an endocrinologist. I opted to wait it out-- and it doesn't happen very often anymore- it did happen today but I don't think it has happened in several months. So I don't think it's urgent and you will be fine waiting till Monday.
Thank you both! I have never had blood sugar issues before and thankfully I wasn't diabetic before surgery so it really scared me to see my blood sugar so high. I am so nervous about reactive hypoglycemia that it scares me to see such fluctuations but I guess it is normal.
I will give my doctor a call Monday just to be sure but since I don't feel bad I am hoping it is just some kind of fluke.
The other thing that had me nervous about it is that I am very thirsty almost all the time. I can drink a gallon of fluids a day easily. I know part of that is that the more you drink the thirstier you get so it may be perpetuating itself. My A1C has always been good so I think I am OK.

My theory (but it is JUST MY theory) is that people who don't dump but say they have the carb coma feeling are experiences symptoms related to a temporary peak in their blood sugar--but people don't tend to check their blood sugar right after eating a high carb meal and don't check till they feel a drop--I bet there are more of us that have experienced it but didn't know. I couldn't find any research or others (non diabetic) who had documented temporary high blood sugars---when I was keeping track of it I was running 250-325 if I checked after a meal with carbs with in an hour but by 2 hrs post eating I was down to 80-100 always.
I hate to say but you need to see an Endocrinologist. You are basically doing your own glucose tolerance test without the pure glucose that you probably cant tolerate. This test in case you aren't familiar with involves drinking this rediculously sweet stuff with 25grams of sugar - you have your sugar tested first and then you drink the stuff. Then 30 minutes later you get your blood tested, 60 minutes later, 90 minutes later, 2hours later and depending on the doctor - some do 3hours. This shows how your body reacts to glucose. You should be normal at the baseline - it almost always goes up, even normal test at 30 minutes but not to 300 (I think up to 150 but I am not sure) and 1 hour is usually still elevated but should be normal at 2 hours. Anyone getting numbers in the 200's or 300's is considered diabetic. I even think 179 isnt' good. I know when I was in the hospital they gave me insulin when I had a sugar level of 180 - not diabetic but I was on steroids and IV fluids with glucose in it, so my sugars were higher than usual. We also realized that they were testing me after I ate and not waiting 2 hours, so when I talked to my Endocrinologist, she discontinued the orders for the insulin.
Endocrinologists usually have diabetics tests there sugars before they eat and 2 hours after they eat. You can try this for awhile and see how your numbers are. This would be a good idea so if you do go see one, you would have more information to give them.
When was the last time you had a HA1C done? This can give you an idea of your over sugars. I was at 6.1 preop and am now at 4.9

See your PCP immediately. In fact, call him and tell him you have had blood sugars in the 300's. You are diabetic and need medication right away. Do not wait.
I am a diabetic too... you have to get in to see your doctor right away!!!
Amanda :)
Edit: You will probably only have to take meds for a while, if you cut carbohydrates out of your diet, and lose weight.
Carbs = Sugar by the way... the shake is pretty high.

you should definitely call your doctor and explain all this to him. It might be too many carbs. I am type 2 can can spike depending what I eat/drink. It's not just the grams of sugar that is important- it is the carbs. Bread makes me spike.
You should probably have an A1 C done as soon as possible and stop those shakes in the meantime.
