First time RNY has held me back

I see what you're saying. I just think that they probably have looked into it. I don't think there should be a blanket rule excluding RNY patients from military service, but I can imagine that there are several jobs that some who has had RNY might have difficulty with.

I wouldn't want to be a soldier in some hot dry desert country and have an episode of reactive hypoglycemia (which seems like it can be very common in RNY veterans) in the middle of combat or some other dangerous situation. Just my two cents....

I think our needs are in many ways different than "normal" people once we are a year out.

"normal" people don't need nearly as many vitamins as we do, and they don't need to be specific types of vitamins.  Like, normal people can use calcium carbonate, but we can't.  It seems like it could be hard for them to make sure we got our vitamins when we were deployed in some situations.

We need more protein than normal people, too.

Normal people don't need a ton of blood work done every six months, either.

I would not join the military for  many reasons, but one reason is that even if they would take me, I would not trust them to be able to meet my health needs.

Hey, Kelly.
Didn't Woody Allen (or was it W.C. Fields?) once say, "I wouldn't want to be a member of any club that would let people like me join." ?

Learning to swim was easy.  The hard part was getting out of that burlap sack.  Those rocks were heavy.

I can't remember who said it but I've heard it before, yeah.

I completely understand the reasoning and it makes sense, it's just very disappointing for me. I couldn't join before because I was too big, now I can't join because of this. I'll survive, it's just extremely upsetting.

I completely understand your disappointment. :( I'm sorry you cant join. What job were you wanting to do? Are you just wanting to serve your country? Have you thought about maybe voulenteering for or getting a job with the USO?

I'm sorry for your disappointment.  I understand the reasoning too but understanding it doesn't mean you have to like it.  It's very hard when there is something we've always wanted and then we find out it's out of our grasp forever.  I'm sure you will find something else very meaningful and fullfilling for you to do but that doesn't mean this is not still a significant loss for you.

I'm sorry you're missing out on what you wanted to do. I'm sure you'll find something you love and have a passion for. Hang in there!

I understand how you feel. My older son applied to Annapolis, met all the requirements, even got the nomination from our Representative. But he was rejected because he has Crohn's and they thought the stress of the program would cause him to have flare ups. He would have to be sympton free and drug free for two years before applying again which at this point is impossible. It was very disappointing and hard for him.

Good luck to you.
