Is my NUT, nuts?

I would like some different opinions.

So I went to my nut to check my progress. I am 10 weeks out and have lost 35 lbs (an average of 3.5 lbs a week) Which I know isn't great. She asked my my average daily caloric intake. I told her about 625 and 75 gms of protein. She said that I should only be getting 65 grams of protein and I am getting about 100-110 calories a day too much. So my daily caloric intake should be 500 calories.

Does that seem right or too low? I am just so confused. I just want to do things right. I ALWAYS get all my vits, water and protein in every day. We are told to eat only 3 times per day and I don't snack in between.....ever

500 calories does not seem like enough to me.  65 grams of protein might be enough but 75 sure won't hurt you.  Why is she concerned that you might be getting ten grams of protein more than you need?

A lot of this is finding out what we need and what works best for us.  Three meals a day with no snacks would never work for me.  It works for some, though.

I would think she was nuts.   Now at 10 weeks I might not have been getting in the 80 grams of protein my program recommends every single day but that was because I had days I just couldn't consume that much in any form, shake or solid.  But the majority of the time I made it.

And 500 calories?  What does she want you to eat, air?  Maybe on those days I couldn't really consume much...maybe.  But most of the time at 10 weeks I was around 700-800 calories.

We are not supposed to snack either but I work 8-6, four days a week.  Around 4-5 I have to have something.  My sugar starts to drop and I get a bit woozy and out of it.  So I have to have a cheesestick, boiled egg, yogurt...something.

But that's me.  I can tell you recognize you have to do what's best for you.

Yeah, she's nuts. Just my opinion. I see nothing wrong with 75g protein - actually, that's my minimum - and taking in too little calories will actually slow down your weight loss b/c your body thinks you're never gonna get in food again.....

In my early stages I didn't worry much about calories...I just focused on protein grams.  I could eat so little I knew there was no way I was eating too many calories.

You need more than 500 calories a day, espeicaly if you are doing any kind of exercise.  It really irritates me when NUTS give out so much crap information.  I would never make it eating 3 times a day either.  I eat around 5-6 times a day small meals, like a container of yogurt, string cheese, hard boiled egg etc or a protein shake.  You really have to find what works best for you.

Your NUT doesn't live with your new plumbing so they have no idea what it is like.  Best of luck.

You are doing much better than I was at 10 weeks out!  I'm 3 months out and have lost about 45 pounds since my surgery. Your weight loss seems great to me!  If you continue loosing at a rate of 3.5 pounds a week, you will loose 182 pounds over the course of a year! Of course, it will probably slow down at some point, but still that's good steady weight loss.

I think that is low. I know at three months I was already at 900-1000 calories a day because I was/am exercising an hour or more a day. Even now I am at 1200 six months out. I also don't think more protein can hurt you unless you were taking so much in your were hurting your kidneys or something.

With all due respect to nutritionists everywhere, I know the one I've seen at my surgeon's office is a bit batty. She told me I could never ever drink diet soda again, never ever drink alcohol again, etc., etc. There are other nutritionists in the same office who give conflicting advice, so I think they are just throwing opinions out there.

I couldn't get through my normal day at 500-700 calories. Work, three kids, gym, karate classes - just wasn't possible.

If it were me, I'd increase the protein... to at least 90...(I was 5'5" and a small framewhat MY doc recommended.)and cut the carbs. as low as I could. That should give you a few less calories, without sacrificing energy or muscle...depending on what protein suppliment you use...

I am at 10 weeks now and I have no idea what my calorie intake is.  I stay focused on my protein and the veggies/fruit I'm supposed to have in a day.  I am supposed to have 91-108g of protein a day which is no problem with protein drinks, protein in my food, etc.  I am guessing I am taking in about 900-1000 calories a day at the most.  I have lost 97 pounds in that 10 weeks, so I am guessing that the calories they're talking about isn't right.  I have been told that if you go to low in calories, your body goes into starvation mode and the weight loss will stall until you up the calories some.  Maybe that is your answer.  Just remember that everyone is different and protein requirements are based on your sex and height.

We are all different.  I'll say for ME 500 calories was tough to reach many days shortly after surgery.  What I did was to just count calories focusing on protein shakes and lean meats with a little veggies as I could eat them.

My surgeon didn't give me any numbers to hit so I never really focused on the total picture for months after surgery.
