Be ready.  People will hate on you.

Use the pain meds.

Dont buy NEW clothes.  Go to Goodwill.  It's so frustrating to buy new pants that you cant wear a week later b/c they fall the F off.

you will do great!  im so proud of you!

It's not all glitter and rainbows.

@Emily P

I did not think of the clothes aspect.  That would work out perfect because a thrift store in town sells clothes 5 for a $1 on Sundays so I will take advantage of that special.

Did you have any backlash from work?  I have only told one person at work so it would be a shock when I came back.  My close friends know as well as my family, but that is the one area in which I am concerned.

Get ready for people to attack you verbaly for taking the "easy way out". Like having major surgery is easy. Get ready to live life again.

I generally keep my mouth shut. But once in a while, comments get under my skin. I told a "friend" that had really upset me once that I was fat, and she was ugly, I could change my "diet" and loose weight, but she would still be ugly. I know that wasn't a nice thing to say, but it sure beat what I was wanting to tell her.

I have not had anyone attack me verbally or otherwise for taking the "easy way out".  Thank goodness!
However, my advice to you is if you smoke, stop now, if you dont smoke, good for you and dont start!  I was one, if not, the last patient my Surgeon performed RNY surgery on who smoked.  I was honest with him and told him I smoked, he advised me to quit asap. I did not follow his advice, and like he told me I developed an ulcer at my stoma within 6 months of my surgery. At the time I was taking Protonix QD, but it did not help.  Now I take Omeprazole 40mg BID and Carafate 1g TID, not fun, as anyone who has ever taken Carafate can tell you.....lol.
So as a 4 year post-op my advice is follow your Surgeons reccomendations to the letter!

I do not smoke and congrats on quitting smoking for you!

Question...what type of communication did you have with your surgeon post surgery or was it specifically with your PCP?

I am 4 weeks post op, I would say don't stock up on foods because your taste may change and the amouts you will be having is so small the first couple of weeks that you will be having your protein more then anything in this phase.  And know that you will beable to drink more everyday, I wondered at fisrt how would I ever get in so much liquids but it does get better everyday :)
Good luck.

Pain was the biggest thing for me. It took them 3 hours to get my pain under control after the surgery before they moved me to my room.

The automated leg compression gadget is annoying.

The sooner you're up and walking, the sooner you can go home and hug a pillow.

Pillows are wonderful to lay down with.

Don't be afraid to ask for pain meds refills once you're at home.

Clear your kitchen of any junk that's not on the list of things to eat. Stock up on what your menu is to be the first two weeks after surgery. I swear, it'll help loads. I did this.

Utilize your nutritionist - I have my NUT's email, cell and office numbers. She encourages quesitons. I've called her from the yogurt section at the grocery store.

Read, learn, read more, learn more.

Ask, ask, ask. This site has s ton of informaiton, but don't forget to stalk your doctors too if you have questions. Never be afraid to ask.

Don't freak out if the scale doesn't move as fast as you want it to. The scale will move as fast as it's supposed to if you're doing all the right stuff.

Begrudgingly learn to love whey...even if you have to pretend. :D
