4 days out - RNY

I had my surgery on Tuesday and ended up meeting with my PCP yesterday (the day after hospital discharge) because my blood sugars are higher now than they have ever been before. They begain elevating while I was still in recovery. I'm getting discouraged because I did this so I would not have to do insulin anymore. While my insulin doses are much lower now, the BS's are much higher. I know it will take time and eventually they will come down but not soon enough for me. Good news is I lost 9 lbs between Tuesday and Friday so that keeps me going for now. I still feel like crap - lots of pain. When will  that subside??

Yeah, it all takes time.  Surgery isn't a quick fix.

I think it was about two weeks before all my pain was gone but it got better gradually.  For now, take your pain meds.

Thank you. I'm finding it hard to get all my fluids in (although I do force them all in). I also get full when I take my vitamins - is that normal?

Yep.  And if you are getting all the fluids in, you're doing better in that regard than many people do just four days out.  So keep up the good work.

((((Pamela)))),

It's really early and I know that it's rough right now, but it really does get easier. You are already doing better and have experienced a whopping 9 lb loss. That's great!!

Your blood sugar's may be higher because your body is under a great deal of stress. Remember before you had your surgery how your numbers would go up if you were sick or seriously stressed? Now you have both things that are issues. Give your body some time to heal and see what happens. I have someone in my support group who had something very similar to what happened to you, happen to him. He was so distraught and sure that his diabetes wouldn't resolve. Well, I just had dinner with him earlier this week. He's such a slim handsome young man, you would never guess he had ever been super morbidly obese and his diabetes has been resolved for more than 2 years!

Wishing you all the best,

Barbara

Thank you Barbara - that's what I'm focusing on now - the weight loss!! It took me 2 years to lose the required 10% so 9 in 3 days is awesome. It's just that everyone in my group stressed about not needing insulin any more right out of surgery. I think that maybe it's because they didn't require the large amounts that I did. I guess going from a total of 160 units a day to 40 isn't that bad afterall :)

It's normal. Mine were pretty high after my RNY. It happens after surgery.
