This may be a stupid question....

But can our old portion of our stomach still make noises? Does it still have operating functions?

Thanks, Jamie

I don't know if it can still make noises or not.  Probably.

As far as does it still have operating functions, I'm not sure what functions you're referring to.  No food ever goes in it now so it cannot help digest food at all.

Mine makes noises all the time.  More than before surgery.

How can you tell if it's your old stomach or your new  pouch making the noises, though?

Jamie,,found this ,, thought it might help answer your question..

The rest of the stomach, the larger 'left over' bottom section, is completely disconnected from the pouch and remains where it normally is but no nutrients ever enter it. It is alive and healthy and still secretes acids and other gastric juices, which flow into the intestines to aid in digestion and it makes intrinsic factor, necessary to absorb Vitamin B12. It also contributes to hormone balance and motility of the intestines in ways that are not entirely known. In some cases it may shrink a bit and its lining (the mucosa) may contract, but for the most part it remains unchanged..

thats what i have read about the stomach too dj.  i think mine growls too..not sure but something makes noise and feels like hunger and its not where i think the new pouch is located.  I was told my new pouch was located like by the sternum area..which is why when i start feeling full i should feel full like in my chest.  if that makes sense?  tell me if someone knows anything different.

Thank you for the replies!!! I know this morning I wasn't hearing my pouch... I swear it was coming from my old tummy! It was wild and crazy sounds coming more from where the old portion is.
Again thanks for the feedback.

It is more likely the noises you are hearing are coming from your intestines rather than your remnant stomach.  This is especially true if you get lax about chewing your food sufficiently.

So do we have to take B12 sublinguly or do we have a intrinsic factor from the old stomach which still works?

I have always been told that we MUST take B12 sublingually or via injection.  I do not know, however, if the remnant stomach does not produce enough intrinsic factor when it is receiving no food, or if not enough of it gets into the intestine to enable us to absorb the B12 (or a combination of the two)
